<div class="mol-para-with-font"><span style="font-size:small;">The majority of Palmyra&#8217;s ancient treasures held by ISIS have been preserved because of a secret deal between the Syrian government and the terror group, a minister has revealed.</span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font"><span style="font-size:small;">Syria&#8217;s antiquities chief Maamoun Abdulkarim said behind-the-scenes work took place to &#8216;convince&#8217; ISIS not to destroy all the city&#8217;s key archaeological features.</span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font"><span style="font-size:small;">Extremists wrecked a number of important structures on the site, including the Temple of Baal, leaving experts with a difficult task of re-constructing the ancient landmarks.</span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font"><span style="font-size:small;">But Abdulkarim said the deal with ISIS had prevented the whole city from being razed. </span></div>

<div class="mol-para-with-font"><span style="font-size:small;">&#8216;We were expecting the worst. But the landscape, in general, is in good shape. &#8216;We could have completely lost Palmyra. The joy I feel is indescribable.,&#8217; .</span></div>
