<p>Donald Turmp&#8217;s &#8216;unfavorable&#8217; poll number – a measure of a politician&#8217;s popularity – is higher than that of any major-party presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan&#8217;s in 1980, and is being compared with that of white supremacist David Duke.<br />
Duke mounted a fringe campaign for president in 1992 as a Republican, scoring a 69 per cent unfavorable number in an ABC News/Washington Post poll before dropping off Americans&#8217; political radar with a tiny fraction of the 8 million primary votes Trump has amassed so far.<br />
The same poll found this week that 67 per cent of Americans dislike Trump, compared with 31 per cent who disagree. Ted Cruz, the Texas senator best positioned to unseat Trump from atop the Republican presidential field, is viewed unfavorably by 53 per cent.</p>

<p>Among mainstream candidates, Trump&#8217;s numbers in a new poll from the Post and ABC are worse than anything the two news organizations have seen in three decades.<br />
The poll itself sampled more Democrats than Republicans, and surveyed adults generally – not likely voters or even the broader category of Americans who are registered to vote.<br />
ABC released historical numbers going back to 1984, which showed President George H.W. Bush as the most disliked big-name White House hopeful, registering 53 per cent at one point in 1992.<br />
It&#8217;s unclear, though, how late in the political season that number was generated.<br />
An ABC spokesperson did not respond to a request to release numbers from 1980, which Trump has recently claimed would show him in the statistical company of President Ronald Reagan.<br />
A Los Angeles Times poll from March 25 of that year found just 30 per cent of Americans had a favorable view of Reagan. Then-President Jimmy Carter was liked by 51 per cent, and Sen. Ted Kennedy had a 60 per cent favorable rating.<br />
Those numbers were reported in The Washington Post the following month.<br />
Carter would survive his primary fight with Kennedy, and Reagan would go on to beat him by 8.5 million votes in a 489-49 Electoral College drubbing.</p>

<p>Politifact rated this claim &#8216;false&#8217; on Thursday, ruling that the gap between Trump&#8217;s &#8216;favorable&#8217; and &#8216;unfavorable&#8217; numbers have consistently been worse in the last year than Reagan&#8217;s were in 1980.<br />
Trump faces an easier hill-climb in the GOP primary season, according to Thursday&#8217;s ABC/Post numbers.<br />
Among Republicans only, Trump scores 56 per cent favorable to 42 per cent unfavorable.Cruz&#8217;s gap when only those in his own party are polled is 58-38 and Ohio Gov. John Kasich&#8217;s is 47-40.</p>
