Hillary Clinton wins New York Democratic primary, beating Bernie Sanders by double digits

Hillary Clinton over Brooklyn native Bernie Sanders<&sol;strong><&sol;span><&sol;h1>&NewLine;<p>Hillary Clinton cruised to victory in the heated primary in her adopted home state of New York on Tuesday&comma; edging out native son Sen&period; Bernie Sanders with a commanding victory that pops the air out of what had seemed to be the outsider candidate’s growing momentum&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;The Democratic election — which both sides battled hard for — was called for Clinton just 40 minutes after the state’s polls closed at 9 p&period;m&period; Later in the evening&comma; she was still cruising with a 57&period;5&percnt;-to-42&period;5&percnt; lead&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;She appeared to win all five boroughs in the city&comma; including Brooklyn — where the Vermont senator was born and where he heavily courted the hipster and youth demographic&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;But despite those efforts — which included a rally that drew 28&comma;000 in Prospect Park on Sunday — Clinton won Brooklyn with around 60&percnt; of the votes&comma; according to the city’s Board of Elections&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;Thank you&comma; New York&period; You put your faith in me 16 years ago and again tonight&period; I’ll never stop fighting for you&comma;” Clinton tweeted shortly after being declared the victor&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;At her victory party in Midtown — where a huge roar went up when she was named the winner — a glowing Clinton said the victory had special meaning for her&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;There’s no place like home&comma;” she crowed&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;She added&comma; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;We’ve won in every region of the country&comma; from the North to the South&comma; to the East to the West&comma; but this one is personal&period;”<br &sol;>&NewLine;At one point during the speech&comma; son-in-law Marc Mezvinsky and her husband&comma; former President Bill Clinton&period;<&sol;strong><&sol;h5>&NewLine;<p>Sanders had tried to appeal to the state’s history as a bastion of progressive values — at one point releasing an ad that featured Franklin D&period; Roosevelt&comma; another New York native&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;But his ties to the city were so faded he thought tokens were still in use in the subway system&comma; and Clinton had far more institutional support from the city’s reigning political elite&comma; including Gov&period; Cuomo&comma; City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Mayor de Blasio&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;And his late surge in popularity combined with the state’s closed primary system likely shut out many voters who would have supported the previously little-known candidate&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Sanders blamed the system even before he lost during his final day campaigning in Times Square&period; It’s administered by the state&period; You have a right to vote&period; And that’s a very unfortunate thing&comma; which I hope will change&period;”<br &sol;>&NewLine;In an earlier radio interview&comma; he said a New York victory was important&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;It is important that we do very&comma; very well here today&period; We need delegates&comma; and I hope we are going to win some tonight&comma;” he said in an interview on WABC on &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;Election Central with Rita Cosby&period;”<br &sol;>&NewLine;But he also said he wouldn’t give up the White House race if he lost New York&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;We’re going to California&comma; but campaign spokesman Brian Fallon warned Sanders on Tuesday to watch his &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;tone” or risk torching the race for the Democrats come November when they face off against the GOP&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;The tone of the attacks was suggesting that if the Democratic Party doesn’t see fit to nominate Bernie Sanders&comma; in which he accused Clinton and the Democratic National Committee of possibly violating campaign finance laws under the terms of their joint fund-raising deal&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Both the DNC and Clinton’s team denied any wrongdoing with the deal&comma; which is similar to one that President Obama had in 2008 and 2012&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Fallon said Tuesday that he expects a &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;spirited contest” in the coming weeks&comma; but that Sanders should avoid attacking the DNC and Clinton&comma;
