<p class="mol-para-with-font">Shanynthia Gardner, 29, admitted to the fatal stabbing while talking to her husband, Martin Gardner, on the phone just minutes after committing the crimes, according to an affidavit obtained by FOX13.<br />
Gardner, according to the affidavit, stabbed four of her children – all under the age of 5 – in the throat area, leaving them to die before deputies arrived on the scene. <p class="mol-para-with-font">The seven-year-old ran outside and told a witness his mother had stabbed his sister, and then the witness told police he saw Gardner come out of the home with a large knife in her hand and then re-entered the apartment.<br />
Deputies reponded to a 911 call around 12:30 p.m., Friday at the Greens of Irene apartment complex in southeast Shelby County after someone saw Gardner&#8217;s 7-year-old son screaming for help and yelling that his sister had been hurt. At the gruesome scene they found two of the children in the living room area and the other two bodies were found lying motionless on the bedroom floor. The victims were a 6-month-old infant, two girls aged 2 and 3, as well as, a 4-year old boy.<br />
Gardner herself had slashes to her neck and wrists. Sheriff&#8217;s deputies found a large butchers knife with what appeared to be blood on it at the apartment were the killings took place.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">First responders were not involved because the kids had been “dead for a long time,” cops said. the suspect’s husband was not at the scene of the crime and has not been charged.</p>

<section class="ra-meta">Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham in his statement lamented the event “This is an egregious act of evil that has shocked us to our core,&#8221; he said.<br />
“One of the most difficult questions in any investigation is always, ‘Why did this happen?’” the sheriff said.</section>
<section class="ra-meta">Gardner is charged with four counts of first-degree murder, four counts of child abuse and four counts of aggravated child abuse and neglect, while investigators are trying to determine what drove her to kill the children.</section>

<section class="ra-meta">So far, the state Department of Children’s Service has not found any record of interaction with the slain children, spokesman Rob Johnson said.However the suspect&#8217;s husband did offer some insight, as he told the police that Last March, she was reported missing after failing to return from an evening run. He told officers “she has been having problems at work and have been felling stressed. She also has been feeling that someone is trying to harm her and her family.”<br />
But Gardner&#8217;s own mother told police her daughter “has not been diagnosed with a mental illness,” according to the report.<br />
The 7-year-old son, lucky to have escaped the fate that befell his siblings is from a different father, is in the care of his stepfather&#8217;s family, after the tragedy.</section>
