The attorney said the victim objected to the age difference between Barnes and her daughter.But prosecutors say it was Barnes who wielded the knife when Cheryl Silvonek was fatally stabbed in 2015.
Jamie Silvonek, who’s now 15, has agreed to testify against Barnes.
Investigators have said they recovered deleted text messages between her and Barnes in which the teen was plotting her mother’s killing, including one that read: ‘I want her gone.’Miss Silvonek also admitted criminal conspiracy, evidence-tampering and abuse of a corpse following the slaying of her mother.

‘I was a monster. There is no sugarcoating it and there is absolutely no sympathy,’ the girl told the court.
Miss Silvonek said the couple discussed killing her mother for a week and Barnes talked about weapons he planned to use.

‘He had proposed that we kill her and we had discussed things such as luring her away, me luring her away,’ Miss Silvonek said.
And he made a comment such as, “I already have my knives picked out”.’
The teenager, who was charged as an adult, was accused of conspiring with Barnes to kill her mother in the driveway of her home.
Prosecutors allege that Barnes stabbed Ms Silvonek before going to a restaurant with her daughter and then buying gloves and bleach.
