<p>A former teacher who had just been convicted of having inappropriate relations with a 13-year-old girl tried to kill himself in front of a horrified jury in a Los Angeles courtroom, this morning. The packed courtroom was shocked and stunned when the 56-year-old man from Huntington Beach, tried to kill himself after being found guilty of having sex with the pupil .<br />
Jeffrey Scott Jones, 56, tried to commit suicide just seconds after the jury found him guilty of raping the unnamed girl when she was 13-years-old.<br />
Jones was accused of raping a 13-year-old relative on May 4 and 9, 2013. He is also accused of sexually assaulting her between Sept. 1, 2012, and April 30, 2013. Jones is accused of touching his 13-year-old girl&#8217;s chest and privates under and over her clothing at different times between Sept. 1, 2012, and this April 30 past and of allegedly raping her May 4 and again May 9, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department.<br />
Jones was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one count of continuous sexual abuse, he posted $1 million bail and was arraigned Aug. 16, 2013<br />
At around 11 a.m. this morning, just as the foreman was delivering their verdict, the defendant sitting next to his attorney picked up a razor, sliced his own throat and screamed. Sheriff’s deputies then tried to restrain the heavily bleeding man. As the courtroom erupted in chaos, the jury was quickly ushered from the room.<br />
An investigation has been launched as to how it could have been allowed to happen, as the court management pledged to review security.<br />
The suicide attempt occurred today at the Orange County Superior Court in Santa Ana, Cal., where Jones was convicted on both felony counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one felony count of continuous sexual abuse.<br />
Describing the incident, his attorney Edward Welbourn, said he saw his client’s head hit the defence table as he bled profusely.<br />
After the incident Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Stichter said Jones, was still combative and needed to be handcuffed as medical personnel tried to stop the bleeding. Subdued, he was taken to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.<br />
Jones was an advanced placement English teacher at Libra Academy in Huntington Park during the time of the alleged crimes. He had worked with children for 27 years while teaching at various schools, including Bell High School in Bell in Cerritos. He now faces a maximum of 68 years to life in state prison.<br />
Public records reveal this wasnot the first time Jones hdad been accused of sexual relations with underage girls. Apparently thrice in the past, he had married three different underage females each of whom was his student at the time. According to a March, 2011 court petition for spousal support by his third wife Nancy Jones, she claims she only discovered after marrying Jones that he was already married to another former student, who was 14 when she met him.<br />
Nancy Jones who herself started dating Jeffery Scott Jones when he was 35 and she was 14. She moved in with him at the age of 17. She also stated that she was the third of his high school Students that he married. At the time she was seeking spousal support, reimbursement for expenses she claimed to have paid during their four-year marriage and other financial considerations .</p>
