Louis Barbati, was shot in his Brooklyn home, on June 30

Detectives have arrested a man for the murder of Louis Barbati, the owner of Brooklyn’s famed L&;B Spumoni Gardens pizzeria, officials said Thursday.
Suspect Andres ‘Andy’ Fernandez, was arrested by a team of FBI investigators who have worked cases involving the Bonanno and Columbo crime families, but it was not immediately clear if the murder is mob-related.
According to police, pizza parlor owner, Louise ‘Lou’ Barbati, 61, was carrying a lot of cash when he was killed on June 30. Reports say the restaurant owner was killed as he arrived home bearing a loaf of bread for dinner and about $15,000 in cash. No arrests were made, and the killer fled without taking any of the money, police said.

Fernandez is expected to be arraigned in Brooklyn Federal Court Thursday, police sources said.

Police outside the Barbati home shortly after the execution style killing

Fernandez allegedly shot Barbati, at least five times, hitting him in the back, leg and arm in the yard of his home . He then ran off without taking the cash.
Barbati’s widow, who was inside the home when the shooting took place, told detectives her husband only brought that much money home about six times a year, raising questions about how the gunman became aware of the precise cash movement.
Fernandez hid behind a tree as Barbati parked his car on the side of his home, prosecutors say. He put on a glove and pulled out a gun before pouncing on Barbati, according to court papers.
A nearby surveillance camera caught Fernandez running to a white Acura, officials said. The killing was not caught on video making him a suspect all along. Authorities spotted his car outside the home the day of the murder and were able to track his escape route — and eventually license plate — by piecing together surveillance video along the way, officials said.

Cops say But there is no known mob connection for now and authorities still consider the slaying part of a robbery gone awry.
The suspect’s cell phone was traced to the pizzeria eatery the day before the shooting, indicating he was stalking the popular owner and knew when he would be carrying cash, the sources said.
The phone was also traced to Barbati’s home the moment he was gunned down, they added.
Court documents said surveillance video caught Fernandez parked, hidden behind a tree before the murder wearing long jean shorts, a dark hooded sweatshirt, sunglasses, a gold necklace and dark-colored sneakers.
The video shows the moment Barbati came home, Fernandez was seen pulling on a glove and holding something resembling a gun, authorities said.
In the video he is shown crossing the street, unloading the gun and fleeing the scene in a white, late-model Acura.
The Barbati family earlier, had offered $50,000 for information leading to the arrest of the killer. In a statement released Thursday, the family thanked law enforcement officials adding, in part, “We now hope that the court system will move swiftly to bring this matter to a just result and that, if convicted, the perpetrator receives the maximum penalty provided by law.”
