<div class="ra-module overflown top">A Florida babysitter charged in the drowning death of 5-year-old Aubrey Alcott, smoked marijuana just hours before the child&#8217;s tragic death, and ingested amphetamines, meth and pot the night before watching the girl who subsequently fell into the pool at back of the house and drowned.</div>

<article id="ra-body">The night before the Nov. 25 drowning, Jacqueline<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>Chiara<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>Bjorndal, had gone to a party, where she was drinking and used “a multitude of drugs,” including marijuana and methamphetamine.</p>

<p>The next day, she asked if she could watch the child in a sleepover at her house, despite the heavy drug use from the previous evening, according to the police report.<br />
The child&#8217;s mother, &#8220;unaware of the amount of narcotics that the defendant ingested,&#8221; agreed to let Bjorndal take care of her daughter.<br />
The 22-year-old Bjorndal was watching a movie with the child in the Palm Bay home on Nov. 26 when the girl asked if she could go outside to pet a caged pig, unattended. Bjorndal in her statement said she felt it was OK to let Aubrey go play at the back, in the dark, unsupervised because she &#8220;was extremely independent and self-sufficient,&#8221; according to police.</p>

<p>The makeshift pig pen is located in the backyard next to a pool, according to the report. Bjorndal was warned that the child could not swim and was not allowed to go in the backyard by herself, because of the conditions of the patio and the pool area.<br />
&#8220;The area surrounding the pool had several coiled hoses that were strewn about, and there were tools and large pieces of equipment on the patio, which could be a hazard for a child to be by herself,&#8221; read the police report.<br />
Bjorndal said she would yell the child&#8217;s name periodically, to make sure she was OK. At one point, she realized her ward was not responding.</p>

<p>She went downstairs, did not see the girl in the backyard and started canvassing the neighborhood. But it wasn&#8217;t for another 20 minutes, when a roommate came home and found the body in the pool, that she realized there had been a fatal accident.<br />
Attesting to the state of her competence at the time of the incident, police say Bjorndal attended a party the previous night, where she &#8220;ingested an unknown amount of amphetamines, marijuana and methamphetamines,&#8221; according to the police report. The following day, the same day she was to babysit, Bjorndal &#8220;ingested marijuana&#8221; in the morning.<br />
Police said: “She [Bjorndal] did not keep an eye on the child who ended up falling in a partially full pool and drown”.</p>

<p>Along with the alleged drug use, investigators said the general conditions in the backyard of the home were not safe for a young child, and she never should have been allowed to go outside by herself. Police said it was a filthy, moldy and hazardous backyard.<br />
“The house does not have a sliding glass door (but) instead has a piece of wood propped up to cover half of the doorway,” the Palm Bay police report said. “The area surrounding the pool had several coiled hoses that were strewn about, and there were tools and large pieces of equipment on the patio, which could be a hazard for a child to be by herself.”<br />
Bjorndal was arrested, Wednesday and charged with aggravated manslaughter by neglect of a child.<br />
She was being held without bond at the Brevard County Detention Center.</p>
