The 24-year-old was facing 30 years in prison after prosecutors accused her of continuous sexual abuse, but she received less time after pleading guilty to a lesser charge.
Alexandra Vera out on a $100,000 bond last summer was ordered not to have any contact with the victim, have her location tracked by GPS, stay in her house between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.. She was also banned from going online, talking to children and going near schools.
In his remarks State District Judge Michael McSpadden said the decade long sentence was designed to send a message.
“We want our teachers to educate our children,” he said in court.
“To keep their hands off our children, to prepare them for the future.”
A therapist spoke on Vera’s behalf Friday and said that she was in love with the student, who reportedly looked older than 13, and was not a “traditional pedophile.”
Investigators said that the illicit relationship began after the boy contacted Vera on Instagram, and they began having sex over the course of nine months.
In her deposition Alexandra Vera, herself the daughter of a police officer said first met the student during a summer school session.
Vera claims she and the teen are in love, said the student initially tried to communicate with her on Instagram. She later sent a message to the student after he didn’t show up for class, which led to the student asking for her phone number.
When the boy asked if two of them could hang out and she agreed, she drove to the student’s house to pick up the boy, and they drove around and kissed in the car, court documents said.
The next day, she drove to the student’s house because the student’s parents were not home, and that was the first time when she and the boy had sex, Vera told officials.
Alexandra Vera, claimed she and the boy were in love
Media attention was focused on the relationship after Vera briefly turned fugitive before turning herself in then turned herself in on the sex abuse charges last summer.
According to the report,Vera told an officer that the school had an open house in October of 2015, when she met the student’s parents. After the open house, Vera went to the student’s home and was introduced as his girlfriend to his parents. The ex-teacher said the boy’s parents were accepting of their relationship and she was invited to family gatherings..
Vera told investigators that the relationship with the student grew, and they continued to have sex and spend time together.
Vera claimed to investigators that the boy’s parents knew what was happening, approved of it and let their son stay over at her house and were supportive of her keeping the baby.
Vera said that the boy’s parents approved of the illicit relationship and had sex countless times before she got pregnant
According to court reports, Vera who has a 6-year-old daughter from a previous relationship said she became pregnant with the student’s baby in January. She told the officer that the student’s family was told about the pregnancy and that they were supportive and excited about the baby, prosecutors said.
Court documents said Vera had an abortion because she got nervous when Child Protective Services showed up at school in February to question her and the student about their relationship. The DA’s Office said Vera denied the relationship then.
The teacher had an abortion after being contacted by authorities, according to court documents.
Other details in the case were revealed at Friday’s sentencing, according to KHOU, including that Vera’s 6-year-old daughter reportedly called her mother’s 13-year-old victim “dad.”
Vera had pornographic pictures of herself and the boy on her phone and allowed other students to have sex in her home, the station reported.
Vera was allowed to remain free on bail during the trial, though was threatened with being sent back to jail after being accused of jogging around the track at the school where she lost her job.
