<article id="ra-body">The office of the Mexican Attorney General said the head of the feared Sinaloa cartel was already in the air on Thursday evening. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration confirmed they took custody of Guzman in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Tex., and a plane carrying him departed for New York at 5:31 p.m.<br />
Guzman has been fighting his extradition for more than a year.<br />
The U.S. Justice Department has been working with Mexican authorities to get Guzman to the U.S. to face charges for 12 murder conspiracies, drug trafficking and money laundering.<br />

<p>In February, it was reported that Attorney General Loretta Lynch would steer Guzman’s prosecution to Brooklyn Federal Court.The Justice Department conceding to the Mexican government’s condition that Guzman would not face the death penalty if extradited, had quietly amended the Brooklyn indictment to remove murder counts.</p>

<p>Guzman has become infamous for his Houdini-like escapes from Mexican prisons.<br />
The 59-year-old spent months on the run after a stunning escape from a high-security lockup in central Mexico in 2015.S<br />
Sources said Guzman will be housed in either the maximum-security terrorist wing of downtown’s Metropolitan Correctional Center or the Metropolitan Detention Center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.<br />
Both facilities are designed for the “containment of extremely dangerous, violent, or escape-prone inmates” .</p>

He has been held in a high-security prison in Ciudad Juarez, on the Texas border since last May.<br />
The AFP reported that Mexico’s Supreme Court dashed his last hopes of avoiding extradition when it dismissed the appeals by the drug lord against his extradition, earlier Thursday,<br />
“The judges decided not to hear the [appeal for] protection” from extradition, a court source said.<br />
The source said the Supreme Court passed the appeals to a separate “collegiate” panel of judges for it to issue a ruling.</article>
