Louisiana Judge, Mike Erwin, of the 19th Judicial District, accused of being a cantankerous racist

Louisiana Judge Mike Erwin, from the 19th Judicial District, allegedly ticked off a taxi driver for giving up his seat to a ‘n****r’, earning himself a ban from a popular local restaurant in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The 67-year-old white judge, it is alleged, publicly scolded a taxi driver for committing the ‘unforgivable sin’ of a white man giving up his seat in a restaurant to a ‘fat n****r’
Mike Erwin, who has been sitting on the Louisiana bench for 27 years was re-elected to a fifth six-year term in 2014. He is the 19th Judicial District’s most senior judge.
The racist diatribe happened Friday, February 3, at Sammy’s Grill, in Baton Rouge, during the popular early evening rush hour. Kaneitra Johnson, a young, black IT worker shared her traumatic experience of public humiliation, in a public Facebook post, after.
The contentious moment occurred when Erwin, formerly assistant city prosecutor in Baton Rouge and assistant district attorney allegedly, ticked off a taxi driver for giving up his seat to a ‘n****r [Johnson]’.
Recounting the incident, Johnson said there was a two-hour wait for her party to be seated, so the group of friends decided to stand at the bar. While at the bar she started speaking with a Lyft driver.
She told the Rogue Collection: ‘He was sitting and I was standing that entire time. He stepped away to the restroom so I sat in the seat until he got back.
‘When he got back I asked if he wanted to have his seat back and he said, “No. I’m about to go anyway.” But before I leave I do need my jacket. ‘
At that point, she claimed to hear an older man, later identified as judge Erwin, telling the taxi driver: ‘You never give up your seat for a n*****.’
For emphasis, the speaker then added: ‘You should have made her get her fat n***** a** up.’
Ms Johnson, wrote on Facebook: “I’ve heard stories about people spewing out hatred but never been the person being spewed upon. I felt so low, embarrassed, unwanted, out of place… all in a place I’ve visited many times before.” At this point, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s office was called to quell the ensuing argument.
Johnson says she didn’t know the other party and only learned the identity of the older gentle man after the event, she added.

Kaneitra Johnson – was made to feel unwanted in her own society, she said

Expressing her sadness at the turn of events, Johnson said she felt ‘so low, embarrassed, unwanted and out of place’.
The sheriff’s deputies spoke with other people at the restaurant. Spokesman for the sheriff’s office, Casey Rayborn Hicks said other patrons interviewed, claimed they did not hear the argument and were unable to confirm whether Erwin really did direct racial slurs at Johnson,.

‘There was a disagreement between patrons, but no arrests or criminal charges or anything,’ Hicks said.
Meanwhile Sammy’s Grill, said the judge is now barred from the establishment, according to manager, Andy McKay, said.
The Root reported McKay saying’I wasn’t there that night, so I can’t comment on the details, but I know police were called.
‘I can also tell you that the owner Sammy Nagem has made it clear that Judge Erwin is no longer welcome here.
‘We will refuse his business.’

Speaking up against the disturbing allegation, Mike McClanahan, president of the Baton Rouge chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, told the Rogue Collection: ‘The Baton Rouge Branch of the NAACP take these allegations very serious. We expect our judicial system to be fair and impartial.
‘This type of behavior by one so entrusted is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
‘We are calling upon the Chief Judge of the 19th JDC and the State Judicial Commission to launch a full, fair and complete investigation. If these allegations are held to be true, we are demanding that Judge Erwin be removed from the bench and a close scrutiny of all his cases involving people of color be had where his sole discretion was at hand. In the absence of justice, there shall be no peace.’
