Meza was convicted of one count of interstate or foreign domestic violence resulting in murder, and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice.
A federal jury returned the verdict on the second anniversary of Merendino’s death.
“David Meza took the life of a man who cared for him, lavished him with expensive gifts and who wanted to create a life with him,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Alana W. Robinson. “On this day, the second anniversary of Jake Merendino’s death, we salute the jury for delivering justice to a greedy killer who will now have to answer for his cruelty.”

Langston, who was pregnant with Meza’s child at the time of the murder, entered a plea agreement in February. She pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, The San Diego Tribune reported.
In 2013, Meza met Merendino online, through an ad that was placed by Meza. He lured the Houston resident into a romantic relationship so that he could kill him, and inherit his wealth.
He allegedly covered up the crime with the help of his girlfriend, Taylor Marie Langston, who was pregnant with their child at the time of the murder.

The hand written will that Meza intended to use as a stake on the Merendino estate

Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexandra Foster told the court Meza planned to kill Merendino for money who had just named him as the sole beneficiary of his estate in a one-page handwritten will written on hotel stationery, for the money.
The prosecution detailed how the Houstonian he bought Meza two cars and a motorcycle, paid for his clothing and trips, and gave Meza access to his bank account.
Merendino was murdered in the early hours of May 2, 2015, days after he closed escrow on a luxury oceanfront condo in Baja California.
On May 1, 2015, according to court document, Merendino and Meza checked into a hotel in Rosarito, Mexico. Foster said that night Meza went back to his apartment in San Diego, then returned to Rosarito just after 12:30 a.m., with Langston following in the couple’s SUV.
Cellphone GPS data from Meza’s phone and border-crossing records tracked his movements, showing that just before 2 a.m. his phone pinged off a cell tower in Rosarito.
He then lured Merendino from his hotel room around 1 a.m. Foster said, by saying his motorcycle had broken down on a highway outside town.
Merendino’s silver Range Rover was later found at a turnout off the highway around 3 a.m. by Mexican police, who then spotted his body dumped down a ravine. An autopsy showed he had been stabbed 22 times and had his throat slashed twice.
Meza and Langston were seen returning to the U.S. after the slaying. In interviews with FBI agents, the pair said they were in Tijuana, Mexico visiting a friend the night of the murder. Their alibi unraveled when the friend refused to back it up. He told investigators that the couple hadn’t visited him.
Eleven days after the killing, Meza staked his claim. He mailed the handwritten will to the probate court in Texas.
Meza’s sentencing will take place on Aug. 7.
