<article id="ra-body">An Arkansas man checking in on his elderly parent arrived to find what Henry Boyce, the prosecuting attorney for Sharp County, called the a &#8220;horrific and tragic,&#8221; case: his mother lying in a pool of her own blood with her caretaker passed out on the floor nearby, her mouth red with gore.<br />
Jane Palmer Sandefur&#8217;s is dead after suffering severe human bite marks, and the woman hired to care for her has been blamed.<br />
92-year-old Sandefur&#8217;s body was riddled with injuries clearly inflicted by human teeth, with police records stating the victim had been &#8220;bitten on the face, hand, arm (and) leg and the nipple of the victim&#8217;s left breast had been bitten off,&#8221; <a href="http://www.arkansasmatters.com/news/local-news/ar-woman-found-covered-with-human-bite-marks-dies-caretaker-arrested/717219921" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">KAIT</a> reports.<br />
Additionally, and perhaps most grisly of all, the search warrant to get blood samples from alleged assailant Jennifer Lea Collins noted, &#8220;The victim appeared to have part of her chin bitten off.&#8221;<br />
Sandefur died on May 18 from the injuries she sustained in the attack, a week earlier on May 11.</p>

<p>Responding officers say when they arrived at the Cherokee Village residence, Collins who reeked of alcohol and had blood on her face, &#8220;was not making any sense in answering questions or making statements, &#8221; police said.<br />
Collins was arrested and charged her with aggravated assault and abuse to an impaired and endangered person, <a href="http://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2017/may/20/elderly-bite-victim-dies-police-focus-o-1/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Arkansas Online</a> reports.<br />
She has yet to be charged with murder since prosecutors are still waiting for her blood sample results from the state crime lab.<br />
Henry Boyce, the prosecuting attorney for Sharp County, called the case &#8220;horrific and tragic.&#8221;<br />
Collins was taken to White River Medical Center&#8217;s Cherokee Village complex for an examination. Police requested that medical personnel draw blood from Collins to &#8220;see what intoxicants were in her system,&#8221; a search warrant granted by District Judge Mark Johnson said.<br />
Scott Sandefur told police he hired Collins to care for his mother. Authorities have not established how long Collins worked for Sandefur or whether she was hired through a caretaking service or directly.<br />
Police arrested Collins May 12 charged her with aggravated assault and abuse to an impaired and endangered person. Collins was held in the Sharp County jail in Ash Flat in lieu of $50,000 bond.<br />
Authorities sent Collins&#8217; blood sample to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock and are waiting for results, and sent Sandefur&#8217;s body to the Crime Lab for an autopsy.<br />
&#8220;Without question, I have to reconsider all of the evidence to determine if murder was committed,&#8221; Boyce said Friday.<br />
&#8220;Up until [Thursday], we were in the process of reviewing witnesses&#8217; statements, photographs and medical records concerning the treatment of the victim,&#8221; Boyce said. &#8220;In light of [victim&#8217;s] death, we have to reassess our previous consideration. If we find facts that lead us to conclude she died of these injuries, we will charge [Collins] with murder.&#8221;</p>
