<article id="ra-body">Newly elected Congressman, Clay Higgins (R-La.), known as the “Cajun John Wayne,” posted an inflammatory remark on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/captclayhiggins/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Facebook </a>Sunday.<br />
Higgins, 55, called upon Christianity to engage in a Holy War against radicalized Muslims.<br />
Higgins is former captain and public information officer of the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana.<br />
In his role as PIO, he made videos for Crime Stoppers which subsequently went viral. He resigned from the post because of public outcry over a video. He’d also resigned from a law enforcement post with the Opelousas Police Department in 2007 over alleged excessive force, <a href="http://theind.com/article-24002-Clay-Higgins-resigned-from-OPD-in-2007-on-cusp-of-major-disciplinary-measures.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Independent reported</a>.</p>

<p>His recent Facebook post reads, “The free world&#8230;all of Christendom&#8230;is at war with Islamic horror. Included in the post was a photo of a British officer standing over the body of a terrorist from Saturday night’s London Bridge attack — the U.K.’s third incident in less than three months.<br />
Clay Higgins is a former captain for the St. Landry Parish Sheriff&#8217;s office and candidate for Congress.</p>

</strong>Higgins, 56, is the former police captain who resigned from his post in 2007, <a href="http://theind.com/article-24002-Clay-Higgins-resigned-from-OPD-in-2007-on-cusp-of-major-disciplinary-measures.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">dodging major disciplinary measures</a> for excessive use of force.<br />
Before winning special elections to congress last year, Higgins, he was best known for a series of local Crime Stoppers <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tz95O1OQCH0" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">videos</a> where he appeared in uniform berating wanted suspects.<br />
The videos got him the nickname of “cajun John Wayne” and their content earned him the ire of his boss, Sheriff Bobby Guidroz, who, “repeatedly told him to stop saying divisive, disrespectful or demeaning things.” Even the ACLU chimed in to criticize Higgins’ use of religious terminology when describing his work.<br />
After he was forced to resign, in a defiant press conference, the former Louisiana sheriff&#8217;s captain told the media that he was &#8220;not forced&#8221; to resign, but &#8220;rather, I&#8217;ve turned in my badge as a matter of conscience.&#8221;<br />
However as <a href="http://theind.com/article-24002-Clay-Higgins-resigned-from-OPD-in-2007-on-cusp-of-major-disciplinary-measures.html">The Independent </a>reports, his disciplinary account details a pair of general orders in the police code of conduct Higgins was accused of violating and recommended four actions:<br />
Demotion from Patrolman First Class to Patrolman<br />
Reassignment to a Patrol Shift for more direct supervision and training<br />
Immediate removal from the SWAT Team<br />
160 hours suspension from duty without pay<br />
On May 31, 2007, Perry Gallow, then the police chief in Opelousas, informed the mayor and city council that: “May 18, 2007, Police Officer Clay Higgins rendered all equipment/property in his possession to Assistant Chief Smith/Opelousas Police Department”.<br />
The council two weeks earlier had approved the disciplinary measures during a special council meeting.<br />
Three days after the council approved the discipline, Higgins turned in his gear and resigned from the department.</p>

<p>Describing his work as a mission from God, Higgins said, &#8220;I will not kneel to violent street gangs. I will not kneel to murderers, or the parents that raised them. I will not kneel to a discredited wanna-be black activist that doesn&#8217;t really have the best interest of his people in mind.&#8221; It was unclear who he was referring to.<br />
Shortly after Higgins was drafted to run to run for office representing the Third District of Louisiana,.<br />
He came in second in the primary, before defeating his opponent, Scott Angelle, in a runoff election on Dec. 10, with 56.1 percent of the vote.</p></div>

<p>The election, it seems, came at an opportune time for Higgins, with the election of “outsider” Donald Trump to the presidency.<br />
Higgins is a supporter of the Trump administration and backed the president’s controversial and currently blocked travel ban.<br />
According to <a href="http://gizmodo.com/congressman-calls-for-holy-war-on-muslims-on-facebook-1795815124" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Gizmodo</a>, Higgins wore bracelets reportedly promoting his online merchandise during a mock swearing-in ceremony, alongside Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, in January.</p>
