Petty Officer 3rd Class Peter Mims was thought to have been lost on June 8 while his guided missile cruiser USS Shiloh was operating in the Philippine Sea.
Forces from the US and Japanese navies conducted a 50-hour search over 5,500 square-miles before the rescue was reluctantly called off at midnight on June 11.|However, four days later, the gas turbine systems technician was located alive and well, according to the Navy Times, although the circumstances of how he survived undetected for seven days are not clear.
Mims, 23, from Interlachen, Florida, has been transported to the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier for psychiatric evaluation and his disappearance is under investigation.

The Navy and Japanese forces dispatched planes and helicopters to search 5,500 square miles in the Philippine Sea before suspending the search on June 11, according to a statement from the U.S. 7th Fleet.
On Thursday, however, days after the Navy had given up on searching outside the ship, Mims was discovered alive and onboard the vessel.
He was found hiding in the Shiloh’s engine room, according to the Navy Times.
The Navy did not comment on what exactly had happened to Mims, who has served for three years, other than saying that he was taken for medical evaluation aboard a nearby aircraft carrier.
Mimms, 23, from Interlachen, Florida, has been transported to the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier for psychiatric evaluation and his disappearance is under investigation.
The sailor was reported missing 180-miles east of Okinawa on June 8 and the search extended for thousands of square miles until June 11 before it was called off
‘We are thankful to have found our missing shipmate and appreciate all the hard work of our Sailors and Japanese partners in searching for him,’ Rear Adm. Charles Williams said in a statement.
‘I am relieved that this Sailor’s family will not be joining the ranks of Gold Star Families that have sacrificed so much for our country.’
The Navy has not responded to questions regarding his recovery and the 7th Fleet – which is based in Japan – has not elaborated on how he was found.

Mims enlisted in the Navy in February 2014 and has served aboard the USS Shiloh since August of that year.
He was initially thought to have fallen overboard while the ship was ‘conducting routine operations 180 miles east of Okinawa,’ according to the Navy. The Shiloh is a 567-foot cruiser, which would normally have hundreds of sailors and officers aboard.
More than half a dozen US Navy and Japanese Defence Force vessels combined with helicopters and aircraft from the Ronald Reagan to search for the missing Mims.
The list of American manpower and ships dedicated to finding the crewman included, the USS McCamphell, USS Barry and USS John McCain.
After spending 50-hours trying to locate the sailor in the Philippine Sea, the search was called off on the stroke of midnight on June 11.
‘The decision to suspend the search was not arrived at lightly,’ said Rear Admiral Charles Williams at the time.
‘Our thoughts are with our lost shipmate, his family, and the officers and crew of USS Shiloh.’
However at the time, Mims’s sister, Amy James said that she did not believe that her brother had lost his life.
‘I just can’t believe he’s gone,’ said James. ‘Is this real? Is this a nightmare?’
‘He’s still alive, he’s got to be fighting for his life’.

“I am relieved that this Sailor’s family will not be joining the ranks of Gold Star Families that have sacrificed so much for our country,” Rear Adm. Charles Williams said in a statement.
Mims’s family said while he was missing that they never gave up on the chance that he was still alive.
“I thanked god. I never gave up hope me and my family never gave up hope,” his sister Amy James said on Facebook.
She said that her brother is “getting the care and rest he needs” and requested privacy for her family.
What happens next with Mims will be driven by the investigation’s findings, spokesman Cmdr. Bill Speaks said.
