<div class="ra-module h">As the jury began deliberations on June 20, in the trial of Michael McCarthy, the 37-year-old man accused of killing 2-year-old Bella Bond and dumping her body in Boston Harbor, the <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2017/06/20/closing-arguments-bella-bond-trial/MeLiPGEXcLpTAj0nS5KC6N/story.html">Boston Globe reports</a> that the eight man jury will have to decide how much credence to be granted the prosecution&#8217;s main witness, Rachelle Bond.<br />
The Jurors have four options for a verdict: not guilty or guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, or involuntary manslaughter as both sides have zeroed in on the credibility of the victim&#8217;s mother Rachelle Dee Bond, a recovering heroin user who waited months before she told police about her daughter’s death in June 2015, while continuing to collect social welfare benefits for her dead child.</div>

<div> Michael Patrick McCarthy&#8217;s lawyer pointed the finger squarely at the victim&#8217;s mother during closing arguments, labeling Rachelle Bond a &#8220;monster&#8221; and a liar.<br />
Defense attorney Jonathan Shapiro, told jurors on Tuesday that Bella Bond&#8217;s mother is the real killer and created a &#8220;web of lies&#8221; while leading authorities on a false trail. Jonathan Shapiro said that prosecutors made a &#8220;deal with the devil&#8221; to bring McCarthy to trial.<br />
&#8220;Without her testimony, the prosecution has no case at all,&#8221; Shapiro said in court, <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2017/06/20/closing-arguments-bella-bond-trial/MeLiPGEXcLpTAj0nS5KC6N/story.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the Boston Globe</a>. &#8220;It was a web of lies. A changing web of lies.&#8221;<br />

<p>After the of the body of the unknown little girl known washed up on a Boston Harbor Island in June. A composite image of the little girl was shared by millions on social media of the toddler dubbed Baby Doe by authorities. She was later identified as Bella Bond.<br />
In September of 2015 Rachelle Dee Bond, mother of 2-year-old Bella Bond and her boyfriend Michael Patrick McCarthy were indicted by a grand jury in the death of the toddler whom the nation intitially came to know as Baby Doe<br />
McCarthy was charged with first-degree murder, while Bond was charged with being an accessory after the fact to her daughter&#8217;s killing.<br />
A larceny charge was added against Rachelle Bond for allegedly continuing to accept public assistance after she knew her daughter had been killed</p>

<p>Rachelle Bond was given a plea deal to testify against McCarthy, and avoided extensive prison time. In the case pitting the erstwhile lovers against each other, the most pivotal prosecution witness was Bond, 40, who testified that she saw McCarthy fatally punch Bella in the stomach in June 2015, then threatened to kill her if she told anyone.<br />
Bond said McCarthy put the child’s body into a plastic bag, weighed it down with barbells, and threw it in the water.<br />
Earlier Bond had told authorities both of them drove to South Boston, where he threw a bag containing the girl’s body into the water.<br />
“After they parked the car, she realized that he was no longer in the car, and neither was the bag or the weights,”Prosecutor David Deakin told the jury”.<br />
“He came back a short time later empty-handed, and she knew what he’d done with her daughter’s body,” Deakin said.<br />

For months, she was known only as “Baby Doe” as investigators conducted an international search to determine who she was. Bella was identified in September 2015, after a friend of McCarthy’s contacted the authorities to tell them Bond had accused McCarthy of killing her daughter.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.wcvb.com/article/closing-arguments-expected-in-bella-bond-murder-case/10046717" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WCVB</a> reports the alternate theory the defense gave jurors, that Bond had killed little Bella, then lied to her boyfriend McCarthy about the state Department of Children and Families taking her daughter.<br />
&#8220;Rachelle Bond made up the story she told you,&#8221; the defense attorney Shapiro said.<br />
&#8220;The story she told was clearly made up to cover her own guilt.&#8221;<br />
During closing arguments, Shapiro brought up a recording of McCarthy reassuring Bella, who was afraid of seeing monsters in her sleep. McCarthy wanted her to use love to get rid of the monsters.&#8221;His advice did not work,&#8221; Shapiro told the jury, according to the Globe. &#8220;In the end, the monster came for this little girl — and it was her mother.&#8221;<br />
Suffolk Assistant District Attorney David Deakin argued that that McCarthy was cold and calculating when questioned about Bella&#8217;s death.<br />
&#8220;He made two critical errors,&#8221; Deakin said.<br />
&#8220;He forgot to act surprised about Bella, and two, he forgot to act concerned.&#8221;</p>

<p>Deakin said as he recalled the 30-minute conversation investigators had with McCarthy, who was in a hospital room awaiting surgery.<br />
He denied hurting Bella Bond. But Deakin told jurors they were listening to a man who had practiced for months what he would say to police, noting that McCarthy never sounded upset when investigators told him Bella Bond had been killed.</p>

<p>Deakin admitted in his closing argument that Rachelle Bond made mistakes, but pointed to the evidence against McCarthy.<br />
&#8220;If you find him not guilty, you will be letting him get away with murder,&#8221; the prosecutor said, according to the Globe.<br />
After closing arguments, the jury deliberated for about two hours without reaching a verdict. Deliberations are set to resume Wednesday.<br />
Bond pled guilty in February to being an accessory after the fact to murder,<a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2017/06/08/rachelle-bond-testimony-might-not-enough-convict-legal-specialists-say/U0ywU5hl1IMNmPaqyrK40I/story.html"> to testify against McCarthy</a>.<br />
The plea deal credits Bond, who has been incarcerated since September 2015, with time served plus two years of probation.</p>
