<p>A couple who adopted a young Iowa girl only to allegedly starve her to death face a host of charges, including murder and sexual abuse.<br />
According to the <a href="http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/crime-and-courts/2017/09/26/warrant-misty-ray-sabrina-ray-threw-out-cell-phones-after-her-death/706839001/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Des Moines Register</a>, 40-year-old Misty Ray and her husband and Marc Ray, 41, the adoptive parents of 16-year-old Sabrina Ray, have been charged this week with first-degree murder and three counts of kidnapping while the latter also has been charged with sexual abuse in the third degree for allegedly abusing another child in the home.<br />
The couple were arrested May 18 in their home in connection with the death of their 16-year-old daughter, Sabrina Ray who was so emaciated that she would be confused for an 8-year-old before her death, At the time Sabrina Ray was found dead at her home on May 12 in Perry, Iowa, she weighed only 56 pounds.</p>

<p>Among the other abuses investigators believe she faced leading up to her death was an incident in which her 21-year-old adoptive brother, Justin, allegedly dropkicked her down a basement staircase at some point between April 15 and May 1.<br />
She could neither walk, speak, drink or eat normally afterwards.<br />
Prosecutors said Sabrina and two other girls, ages 10 and 12, adopted and home-schooled by the Rays, were &#8220;secretly confined and had suffered unreasonable force, torture and cruelty for an extended period of time,&#8221; including being made to go without food and water.<br />
Marc and Misty Ray faced multiple felony charges, while Justin Ray and Sabrina&#8217;s adoptive grandmother, Carla Bousman, 62, were named as accomplices.<br />
According to the Des Moines Register, the home was visited by Iowa Department of Human Services and social workers in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 after at least two complaints of inadequate nutrition and corporeal punishment were filed, but workers said they found no evidence during their visits.</p>

<p>Justin Ray faces two counts of child endangerment and two counts of willful injury.<br />
Misty, Marc and Justin Ray were in Nashville, Tenn., at the time of the girl&#8217;s death. When they heard she died, the matriarch reportedly threw out all of their phones as well as her 10-year-old son&#8217;s device.<br />
The Rays brought Sabrina into their home as a foster child in 2011 before adopting her in 2013.<br />
Her adoptive cousin, Josie Bousman, 20, has been charged as well after she allegedly admitted to helping to hurt Sabrina, keeping her confined and not giving her food and water.</p>

<p>The dead teen&#8217;s adoptive grandmother, Carla Bousman was accused of assisting in kidnapping and torturing Sabrina, who was disabled, as well as two other adopted girls in the home and helping cover up Sabrina&#8217;s May 12 death and the girls&#8217; injuries.<br />
Bousman has been charged with first-degree kidnapping, child endangerment causing death and obstructing prosecution or defense for allegedly altering evidence at the crime scene and providing false evidence.<br />
A trial isn&#8217;t expected until next year due to the overwhelming amount of evidence against the family.</p>
