<p>Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Sunday that mass shootings can be prevented if more people carry concealed guns. “If somebody&#8217;s willing to kill someone they&#8217;re also going to be willing to violate a gun law. In Texas at least we have the opportunity to have concealed carry,” he said on Fox News.<br />
“And so if it&#8217;s a place where somebody has the ability to carry, there&#8217;s always the opportunity that gunman will be taken out before he has the opportunity to kill very many.”<br />
His comment comes in response to the shooting at a church near San Antonio, Texas church Sunday morning that killed 27 people, injuring 24 more, the deadliest church shooting in American history.</p>

<p>The Tea Party Republican gained national notoriety last year, while facing state and federal securities fraud charges, put up a novel defense by releasing a video ahead of a hearing in a state appeals court, saying he is staying in office and being targeted because of his Christian beliefs.<br />
Earlier in 2016 Paxton had sued Waller County, Texas, over the right to bear arms in the Waller County Courthouse complex. Gun rights advocates had protested the County’s actions in preventing lawful carrying pursuant to the protection of a new state law.<br />
The gun rights advocates accused officials in Waller County of being “tyrannical” “bullies” and abusing their power.<br />
Paxton in a statement said, “A local government cannot be allowed to flout Texas’ licensed carry laws, or any state law, simply because it disagrees with the law or doesn’t feel like honoring it.” He added, “I will vigilantly protect and preserve the Second Amendment rights of Texans.”</p>
