<p>Robert Mugabe resigned as presidentof Zimbabwe with immediate effect Tuesday after 37 years in power, shortly after parliament began impeachment proceedings against him early Tuesday.<br />
The country&#8217;s parliament erupted in cheers as the announcement was made that the 93-year-old despot had resigned &#8216;with immediate effect&#8217;. Online videos show MPs getting up onto their chairs and dancing, as others sing and clap their hands.<br />

<div>In his resignation letter today, Mugabe wrote: &#8216;I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation with immediate effect.</div>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">&#8216;My decision to resign is voluntary on my part. I have resigned to allow smooth transfer of power. Kindly give the public notice of my decision as soon as possible.&#8217;<br />
It comes as it emerged that the despot has been left isolated and humiliated after his demands for ministers to attend his weekly cabinet meeting were dismissed.<br />
The army seized power after Mugabe sacked the ruling party&#8217;s favorite to succeed him, Emmerson &#8216;The Crocodile&#8217; Mnangagwa, to smooth a path to the presidency for his wife Grace, 52.<br />
The jubilation kicked off with members of the Zimbabwe Parliament in chambers dancing on tables after news of Mugabe&#8217;s resignation. The rapturous reaction was no less ebullient outside the building in downtown Harare.,as ordinary Zimbabweans celebrated outside the parliament building immediately after hearing the news that President Robert Mugabe had resigned.</p>
