Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County, Florida, has been locked down Wednesday afternoon after multiple people were shot inside the school, police confirm. said that at least 50 people have been injured.
The shooter, a student, is in custody, the sheriff’s office said on Twitter.Florida Senator Bill Nelson said on Fox News that there have been “many deaths” at the school as a result of the shooting.
Superintendent Robert Runcie confirmed there are “numerous fatalities” and said students who are still inside the school are being led out by police as they search room by room. Fire rescue officials said the situation is being treated as a mass casualty incident, with 17 fatalities and up to 50 victims injured, but the exact number of those who were wounded is not yet known.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office tweeted, “So far we have at least 14 victims. Victims have been and continue to be transported to Broward Health Medical Center and Broward Health North hospital.”
Twelve people died in the school, three bodies were found outside, while two of the victims succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
According to CNN, an AR-15-style rifle was recovered by police.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said they are at the scene of a “developing incident” at 5901 Pine Island Road, which is Douglas High School. Police said they received a report of an active shooter. Police have asked people to avoid the area.

Desperate parents and relatives of students still locked down in the high school rushed to the scene to find out if their children were among the injured.
One mother, Michelle, whose daughter was inside, said there at least 20 students and teachers still barricaded in the school buildings. The unnamed mom said her daughter sent her a text that said: ‘There’s been a shooting in school … and it’s for real.’

Terrified students sat or lay on the floor of the classroom, trying to avoid being hit, as rapid gunfire was heard nearby.
Speaking outside the police perimeter, she said: ‘She was texting me up until about four minutes ago and now she’s not responding and I’m getting nervous. Last she texted me she was in a building from across where the shooting was at. I’m on pins and needles because she isn’t responding to me now.’
CBS Miami reporter Rick Folbaum said he was exchanging messages with a child still inside, who is hiding in a closet.
‘I’m continuing to text with a student, a young girl who I know well, who is in the building right now who told me that she heard a loud noise and what sounded like gunfire, three shots’, he said.
‘She texted: All of a sudden there was a really loud noise…..people are crying the closet.’
A father named Caesar Figueroa told CBS: ‘My daughter is with a friend and is trapped in a closet. She is afraid to talk out loud. It’s like a war zone here with cops, machine guns, helicopters. The FBI is here, everyone is here. I told my daughter not to call me because I don’t want anyone to hear her voice.’
Photographs taken by students inside the school showed them crouching behind piles of chairs and hiding behind desks.
The shooter reportedly fled the building when police arrived mixing in with others students leaving the school.
Video showed at least five people being treated by paramedics at the scene while students were led away from the school in a line. But reports show that many more were shot and injured.
Television footage showed police in olive fatigues, with weapons drawn, entering the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, then dozens of children frantically running and walking quickly out.
The shooting was first reported about 2:30 p.m. and the shooter was taken into custody just before 4 p.m. The Broward County Schools district said on Twitterthat the shooting happened close to dismissal.
The School was put on lockdown and the Scene Remains Active Despite a Suspect Being Taken Into Custody at a Home Near the School, but police later took the suspect into custody at a home not far from the school.
A student who is inside the school told CBS Miami through text message, “All of a sudden there was a really loud noise…..people are crying” and hiding in “the closet.”

Federal authorities are responding to the scene, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which is typical in active shooter incidents.
“ATF agents from the Miami Field Division are responding to reports of a school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. The investigation is ongoing and active,” the ATF tweeted.
About 2,900 students are enrolled at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The school is part of the Broward County Public Schools system.
