Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum said Sunday that students would be better off “taking CPR classes” than marching for “phony gun laws.
“How about kids, instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem, do something about maybe taking CPR classes or trying to deal with situations that when there is a violent shooter that you can actually respond to that,” Santorum said on CNN’s ‘State of the Union.’
The Republican two-time presidential aspirant, speaking as part of a panel, said participants in Saturday’s nationwide March for Our Lives events were passing the buck to their representatives when they should be preparing to respond to the next mass shooting.
“They didn’t take action to say, ‘How do I, as an individual, deal with this problem? How am I going to do something about stopping bullying within my own community? What am I going to do to actually help respond to a shooter,’ ” Santorum told host Brianna Keilar.
“Those are the kind of things where you can take it internally … instead of going and protesting and saying, ‘Oh, someone else needs to pass a law to protect me.’
“I think everyone should be responsible and deal with the problems that we have to confront in our lives,” Santorum continued. “Phony gun laws don’t solve these problems.”

Fellow CNN panelist Van Jones countered, “I want [my son] focused on algebra and other stuff. If his main way to survive high school is learning CPR … we’ve gone too far.”
Backlash against Santorum on social media followed soon after the segment.
“CPR won’t stop the 96 daily deaths due to gun violence,” tweeted Matt Deitsch, older brother of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre survivor and march organizer Ryan Deitsch.
Air Force vet and US Representative Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), added, Dear Rick Santorum. CPR is good for heart stoppage. Not good for victims of multiple AR-15 bullets, which typically impart 3 times the lethal energy upon impact than a 9mm handgun bullet.”

On Saturday Mar 24, from  Sacramento, California, to the national mall in Washington, DC,  over a million people chanted “the NRA has got to go” at the gun safety rallies.

The global outcry of young people for stricter gun laws created a loud echo. Even the republican white house through Deputy press chipping in with support “We applaud the many courageous young Americans exercising their First Amendment rights today,” said White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters.
“Keeping our children safe is a top priority of the president’s.”
At rallies in New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, hundreds of thousands of children accompanied by parents and teachers, including survivors of the 1999 Columbine high school massacre to the Sandy Hook school shooting, as well as the survivors of the nearly weekly incidents of school killings across the nation,  were overjoyed by the big crowds Saturday at gun-control rallies across the country.
“I have been waiting so long for something like this to happen,” said Joanna Gates, who was 17 when she lived through the Columbine school shooting in Colorado that left 13 dead, not counting the two shooters. “It’s time for change. It’s beyond time,” Gates said Saturday at the anti-gun march in Washington.
And the protests went viral and global – From Argentina to Iceland, from Ghana to New Zealand, young people and their supporters rallied across the world Saturday in support of American students fighting for stricter gun-control laws.
The March For Our Lives Web site listed over 40 “sister marches” in other countries.
