<p class="mol-para-with-font">Police believe they have finally captured the Golden State Killer, a serial murderer and rapist suspected of terrorizing southern California nearly 50 years ago.<br />
Late Tuesday night, the Sacramento County Sheriff&#8217;s Department arrested Joseph James DeAngelo Jr on two murder charges.<br />
The 72-year-old man, who is believed to have been an Auburn police officer fired for shoplifting a hammer and dog repellent, is said to be linked to a dozen unsolved homicides, almost 50 rapes and 120 home burglaries that spanned a decade starting in the late 1970s.<br />
Joseph James DeAngelo Jr. was arrested in California Tuesday night on two murder charges. The now-72-year-old is suspected of being the Golden State Killer.<br />
Authorities in recent days they were able to matched DNA evidence from the crimes to the suspect, leading to the arrest. Police believe they found ski masks worn by the Golden State Killer. Fingerprints were also found at some of the crime scenes.<br />
Sacramento Sheriff&#8217;s deputies arrested DeAngelo as he was leaving his home in Citrus Heights, California, which is near Sacramento. Authorities said DeAngelo was surprised when they found him.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/seeking-info/unknown-suspect-21">FBI released images </a>of the Golden State Killer created from composite sketches from witness accounts of the suspect whose identity has been a mystery for decades.</p>

<p>Feds were offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual known as the East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer. Described as a White male, currently thought to be between the ages of 60 and 75 years old, and approximately 5&#8217;10&#8221; tall, possibly with blond or light brown hair and an athletic build.<br />
The suspect feds said, may have had an interest in the military, or had some military training, leaving him familiar and proficient with firearms, was responsible for approximately 45 rapes, 12 homicides, and multiple residential burglaries throughout the State of California between 1976 and 1986. His victims ranged in age from 12 to 41.</p>

<p class="imageCaption">DeAngelo who left the navy in after an accident in 1967, was fired from the Auburn police department in 1973 according to a newspaper clipping, for shoplifting a hammer and dog repellent from a Sacramento drug store.<br />
Auburn City Manager Jack Sausser said at the time that DeAngelo failed to answer any of the city’s investigations and there ‘was justifiable grounds to remove him from the public sector&#8217;.<br />
The newspaper article had alleged that DeAngelo was a suspect in the crime wave back then. Interest in the Golden State Killer, also known as the East Area Rapist, was reawakened recently following the posthumous release of a crime novel by author Michelle McNamara, titled <a class="class" href="https://www.amazon.com/Ill-Be-Gone-Dark-Obsessive/dp/0062319787/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&;qid=1524674266&;sr=8-1&;keywords=i%27ll+be+gone+in+the+dark&;linkCode=ll1&;tag=dmplants-20&;linkId=4d2197e090012dc9fcf2dd766ae46551" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">I&#8217;ll Be Gone In The Dark</a>.<br />
The late journalist spent much of her career researching the Golden State Killer. She turned her findings into the book. Her husband, actor Patton Oswalt collaborated with fellow journalist Billy Jensen, finishing the book which was released February. It quickly climbed to the number one spot on the New York Times Best Sellers list.</p>

Book collaborator, Billy Jensen, who helped co-author I&#8217;ll Be Gone In The Dark, has also tweeted about the suspected killer&#8217;s arrest, writing in another post that it was an exciting day.</p>

According to investigators DeAngelo he gained access to the homes by prying open a window or door while the victims slept. He would then shine a light in the face of his victims and tie up the female victim. If a male victim was present, the Golden State Killer would tie him up as well before ransacking the home and raping the female victim.<br />
Detectives said the killer often took small items during his burglaries such as coins, cash, ID cards and jewellery.</p>

The Golden State Killer&#8217;s fifth victim, Jane Carson-Sandler, survived an October 1976 attack. Carson-Sandler said her husband had just left for work when the masked man broke into her Citrus Heights home, bound and gagged her and her three-year-old son and then raped her.<br />
Carson-Sandler, who wrote a book about surviving the attack, told the <a class="class" href="http://www.islandpacket.com/news/local/crime/article209776449.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Island Packet</a> on Wednesday that she received an email from two detectives informing her of the suspected killer&#8217;s arrest.<br />
&#8216;I&#8217;m overwhelmed with joy. I&#8217;ve been crying, sobbing,&#8217; she said. &#8216;I just can&#8217;t tell you how I feel. After 42 years &#8211; wow!&#8217;</p>
