Bonnie Jean Colwell, was engaged to DeAngelo in the early 1970s, but broke it off, and went on to marry a wealthy accountant.“Most certainly if he’s making the statement, ‘I hate you Bonnie,’ while he’s attacking another female, he is what we call a retaliatory rapist,” Paul Holes, a retired Contra Costa investigator who helped crack the case told the Mercury News.
“You’ve got to think Bonnie dumped him, he’s not happy about that, he still had feelings for her, who knows? But something along those lines must have happened,” he added.
DeAngelo met Bonnie Colwell when they were both students at Sierra College in Rocklin, California, in the Sacramento area.
The couple announced their engagement in the May 14, 1970.

However two years later, Colwell’s wedded Michael Graf Ueltzen, on Aug. 12, 1972. The couple went on to live an affluent lifestyle in Sacramento.
Ueltzen, 67, who currently resides in Sacramento, is reportedly, now is in “hiding”.
DeAngelo from the Sacramento suburb of Citrus Heights, was arrested on Tuesday. Police believe he is responsible for at least 12 murders, 51 rapes and 120 home invasion burglaries over three decades, beginning in 1976.
Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., a 72-year-old father of three daughters, was arraigned on two counts of murder and is being investigated in connection with more than six more killings, thanks to DNA evidence, officials said.
The accused “Golden State Killer” appeared in a Sacramento court Friday where he was charged with two counts of murder while shackled to a wheelchair.

Dressed in regulation orange jumpsuit, the 72-year-od retiree who was handcuffed  in a wheelchair, was arraigned on charges that he killed a Sacramento County couple in 1978, the commencement of a killing spree he allegedly committed between Northern California and Orange County. he came to be known as the Golden State Killer.
He sat expressionless suspect who was surprised , authorities eventually caught up with him on Tuesday, did not enter a plea.
He occasionally closed his eyes as Judge Michael W. Sweet listed the charges against him. and responded in a soft voice that he had a lawyer and understood the charges against him.

DeAngelo Jr. worked as a cop in the Exeter Police Department from 1973 to 1976 later in Auburn from 1976 until 1979, before being dismissed for shoplifting a hammer and a can of dog repellent. Authorities said they said they are now looking into whether he may have been on duty when he committed at least some of his heinous acts.
He was busted on two counts of murder and arrested in connection with several more killings, thanks to DNA evidence, officials said. In addition to the two murder charges in Sacramento County, he also faces two counts of murder in Ventura County and four counts of murder in Orange County. Held without bail, DeAngelo is being housed in isolation and on suicide watch, while in custody, sheriff’s officials said.
Authorities are still working on collecting evidence against him to bring more charges against the Navy veteran and former police officer was arrested Wednesday and identified as the Golden State Killer.

The suspect who authorities had under surveillance for the past few days was finally nailed by matching DNA material he recently discarded, to bio evidence collected from crime scenes decades ago.
Police matched DNA from items he discarded with samples found at his many crime scenes. They used a sample from an Internet genealogy site submitted by a distant relative to narrow their search to him, according to the Sacramento Bee.
Investigators compared crime scene DNA to online open-source profiles until they found the relative.
After months of comparisons, investigators finally narrowed the DNA evidence in the cold case down to DeAngelo on April 20 and began surveilling him. A day later they got a DNA sample from an item he discarded.
The county crime lab found ‘overwhelming evidence’ that after 44 years they had finally got their man, Sacramento County Chief Deputy Attorney Steve Grippi said.
Requiring a second match to make a convincing case, that sample was recovered on Monday.
‘The second sample was astronomical evidence that it was him,’ district attorney Anne Marie Schubert said, adding, ‘There were a whole lot of holy s**t moments.’

Offerman, 44, and Manning, 35, were killed at a home in Goleta near Santa Barbara. Offerman, an osteopathic surgeon, and Manning, a clinical psychologist, had their hands bound with twine.

DeAngelo is also charged with murdering Lyman and Charlene Smith at their Ventura County home on March 13, 1980

Judiciary staffers Lyman Smith, 43, and his wife Charlene, 33, were bludgeoned to death with a fireplace log in their Ventura County home. Lyman Smith was an attorney who was just days from being appointed a judge. His wife worked as a court clerk.

Patrice was a pediatric nurse and her husband was a medical student at UC Irvine.

Domingo, 35, and Sanchez, 27, were house sitting in Goleta when they were murdered in bed. Domingo was found with her hands tied and suffering massive head injuries. Sanchez was shot and bludgeoned.

Manuela Witthuhn, 28, was raped and beaten to death in her home in Irvine, Calif. on Feb, 1981. She reportedly was home alone at the time because her husband was in the hospital, convalescing from an illness.
DeAngelo’s last known victim was 18-year-old Janelle Lisa Cruz who was murdered on May 4, 1986. Cruz was home alone when she was bludgeoned to death in her family’s home in Irvine. Police sources said she was beaten with a pipe wrench.
A real estate agent who was selling the family’s home was the first to discover the gory scene. Cops found the teenager her lying across her bed, blood was found spattered throughout the home.
