<p class="meta">“Violent cold cases never grow cold for their victims or loved ones,” Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley said Thursday as she announced the charges of first-degree murder against Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/golden-state-killer-suspect-charged-four-more-murders-total-12-n873201">NBC News reported</a>.<br />
DeAngelo, who was a cop in the California towns of Exeter and Auburn in the 1970s, was <a href="https://konniemoments.com/2018/04/26/golden-state-killer-nabbed-42-years-after-embarked-on-the-first-of-a-dozen-and-50-rapes-ex-cop-joseph-james-deangelo-jr-terrorized-sacramento-in-the-70s-and-80s/">arrested at his home in a Sacramento suburb </a>on April 24.<br />
He was previously charged with eight murders, including four in Orange County, two in Ventura County and two in Sacramento County. He has not yet entered a plea.<br />
He was identified in the 42-year-old coldcase after crime scene DNA matched with genetic material from a distant cousin who was registered to a genealogy website.<br />

But until Thursday, he hadn’t been charged in Santa Barbara County, where investigators believe he killed Robert Offerman and Alexandria Manning in December 1979 and Cheri Domingo and Gregory Sanchez in July 1981, Dudley said.<br />
Each of the four new counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances carries a possible sentence of death or life in prison without parole.<br />
The masked gunman raped women who were home alone and women who were with their kids, and he killed women and men together, authorities have said.<br />
Paul Holes, a retired investigator who reportedly came up with the family-tree tracing technique, has said authorities believe that DeAngelo, if he is the killer, was driven by the <a href="https://konniemoments.com/2018/04/29/golden-state-killer-was-driven-by-hatred-of-ex-fiancee-james-joseph-deangelo-was-snared-by-relatives-dna-from-genealogy-websites/">breakup of his engagement to a woman in the 1960s.</a><br />
Holes said that when investigators began looking into DeAngelo’s background, they found an old newspaper article about his engagement to a woman whom he ended up not marrying.<br />
“We assumed that there had been some breakup in their relationship and that possibly caused him some angst,” he said, according to NBC News.<br />
Holes also said this week that the suspect may have had an accomplice.<br />
“Those of us who are familiar with the case files recognize that is a possibility,” Holes told the Sacramento Bee on Monday. “I’ve always just held open the possibility of a second person assisting in a few cases, but not being active through the whole series.</p>
