New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch thinks President Donald Trump has missed the point of NFL players’ protests over racial inequality and he hopes to hear less from the White House during the 2018 season.
The award-winning film producer told The Hollywood Reporter at a recent premiere, that Trump ‘has no understanding of why they take a knee or why they’re protesting.’
The protests began in 2016 when then San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem as a moral campaign to raise awareness about inequality and police brutality against minorities.
He has remained a free agent since March of 2017, as many teams have passed on the opportunity to sign the talented player, seen as lightening rod by some power brokers.

Tisch, who inherited his father Preston Robert Tisch’s stake in the team, also wants Trump to lay off the league’s 32 owners – many of whom happen to be donors.
‘When the new season starts,’ Tisch continued, ‘I hope his priorities are not criticizing the NFL and telling owners what to do and what not to do.’
Beginning with a September rally in Alabama, Trump has turned the controversy over the protests into a constant theme.
‘Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when someone disrespects our flag to say, “Get that son of a b**** off the field right now,”‘ Trump told a cheering crowd in Alabama on September 22. ‘”Out. He’s fired. He’s fired.”‘
Trump has more than a passing tie to majority of NFL owners.
Several NFL owners donated $1 million apiece to Trump’s inauguration fund in 2016, while several others pitched in the campaigns with significant amounts. One such owner, the New York Jets’ Woody Johnson, ultimately accepted the position as U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, where he is still serving.

The demonstrations were primarily a reaction to the escalating trend of deaths of African-American men at the hands of law enforcement.
The NFL did not institute any rule requiring players to stand for the anthem during the 2017 season, which resulted in further criticism from Trump. In May the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell changed course and announced a new policy: Players will no longer be required to be on the field during the anthem – a rule that began in 2009 – but anyone on the field of play will be required to stand. Teams can be fined for any personnel not standing, and they have the right to fine players individually. Addressing the issue, Giants other co-owner, president and CEO John Mara, told Sirius in May that he thought the new policy was the right move.
‘We’ve been supportive of those in the past who have decided to protest, but I think we’ve gotten to a point now where it’s become such a divisive issue that I think it’s important that we come out of here with a policy that everybody can respect and adhere to,’ said Mara.
