<p>A former NYPD cop was sentenced Wednesday to six years in prison for taking bribes and ferrying cocaine for an informant posing as a drug dealer.<br />
Johnny Diaz, 48, took a plea deal last month admitting to possession of a controlled substance, bribe receiving and petit larceny.<br />
“It’s not just that you were paid to assist the undercover to transport the cocaine but that you were paid by the undercover, who you thought was a drug dealer, to make certain that the undercover arrived safely at the drop location?” asked Manhattan Supreme Court Justice James Burke.<br />
“Yes,” replied Diaz, wearing an orange prison-issue jumpsuit<br />
An internal probe uncovered Diaz’s crime and he was busted last June.<br />
Prosecutors say that he arrested the investigator posing as a drug dealer on May 23 and failed to log $1,000 in cash he recovered from the man.<br />
After returning the undercover’s phone from an evidence locker, he accepted a $250 bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue scotch as a thank-you gift, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.<br />
Diaz then offered to throw the man’s case in exchange for $20,000, which he never received, and accepted $4,000 to help transport a kilo of cocaine from the Bronx to Manhattan.<br />
“I should know better — I’m a cop,” he admitted to the informant.<br />
Defense lawyer Patrick Brackley said: “Today Mr. Diaz closes the book on a 23-year career as a New York City Police Officer. He will serve his sentence and honor his family.”</p>

<p>Diaz, a 23-year veteran of the New York city police force, was initially probed for allegedly offering to help crooks beat their charges in exchange for cash. Authorities assigned an undercover investigator to track Diaz who then posed as a drug dealer in his patrol area.<br />
Diaz arrested the informant May 23 and allegedly logged only $17,000 of the $18,000 in cash he recovered from the man, according to prosecutors. He then offered to return the dealer’s cell phone from an evidence locker and accepted a $250 bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue scotch as a thank-you gift for the favor, said ADA Emily Farber.<br />
The crooked cop then allegedly offered to tamper with the man’s pending case in order to get it tossed in exchange for $20,000.<br />
The crooked cop, on a later date, June 15, also later helped transport a kilo of cocaine in NYC, from The Bronx to upper Manhattan for the informant in exchange for $4,000, authorities said. After moving the consignment, the two men partied at a lower Manhattan club, where Diaz made his damning admission: “I could do life for this.”<br />
After a glum-looking Diaz pled not guilty during his first court appearance in June, a disgusted Manhattan DA, Cyrus Vance Jr., chided him: “As alleged in this case, this Officer was willing to traffic dangerous narcotics in the city he is sworn to protect for a few thousand dollars, and to steal evidence from his own precinct for a bottle of scotch,” Vance Jr. said in a statement.<br />
Diaz faced up to 40 years in prison on the charges.</p>
