<p class="mol-para-with-font">An anesthesiologist convicted of killing his wife and her 16-year-old daughter, Lily Khaw Li Ling. by placing a yoga ball that leaked carbon monoxide in their car has been sentenced to life in prison in Hong Kong.<br />
After a 53-year-old doctor in Hong Kong, Khaw Kim Sun, had become estranged from his wife, Wong Siew-Fung, 47, and their four children, however they continued to live together while he carried on an affair with a student.<br />
Khaw, a Malaysian citizen practising in Hong Kong was convicted Wednesday after seven hours of jury deliberation. He had decided to kill his wife because she would not grant him a divorce, prosecutors said.<br />
&#8216;It is shocking that a highly educated and successful man would conjure up such a calculated method to get rid of his wife,&#8217; judge Judianna Barnes Wai-Ling told Khaw.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Wong and their 16-year-old daughter were found unconscious in the car parked at a bus stop about an hour after leaving home.<br />
Both Wong and her daughter were found unresponsive in their car two hours later by a jogger and others, who called an ambulance for them.<br />
It was too late for doctors to save their lives when they arrived at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, the very hospital Khaw Kim Sun worked at.<br />
They were later declared dead from severe carbon monoxide poisoning, although their vehicle showed no defects such as a leaky emissions system.</p>

<div>The case, initially puzzling to Hong Kong police, was broken open when the presence of the deflated yoga ball drew suspicion.<br />
But when the trial came to an end, puzzling loose ends remained including how the yoga ball ended up in the car.<br />
Significantly, although were security cameras installed in the family home, they were not working around the time of the murders.</div>
<div>Khaw was arrested in September after colleagues from the teaching hospital where he worked spoke with police.<br />
Khaw reportedly obtained the carbon monoxide from the hospital. Witnesses said they saw the associate professor at Hong Kong&#8217;s Chinese University filling two balls with carbon monoxide.</div>

<div>Khaw denied committing murder, but admitted to taking the gas home.<br />
He told colleagues he wanted to &#8216;test its purity&#8217; and its effects on rabbits, but later contradicted himself he told police he took the gas home to exterminate the rats infesting his village house. He then suggested Lily somehow might have used it to commit suicide.<br />
His lawyer, Gerard McCoy, presented an alternative version in court, saying Lily, who had a phobia of bugs, used the gas to kill insects, unaware of the potential fatal consequences.</div>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">The defence also argued Khaw had an alibi. With a concentration so high it could cause someone to pass out in minutes, the defence argued. It would require the ball to have been planted right before the car was driven away, still leaking the gas.<br />
That would clear Khaw from being the perpetrator, because he left home at about noon for a university seminar.</p>

While Khaw stood to inherit considerable amounts of property co-owned with Wong following her death, there was no apparent motive for killing his daughter, leading to speculation that her death was unintentional.<br />
However, he had allegedly told his younger daughter to finish her homework at home.<br />
Khaw&#8217;s other children reportedly cried when the verdict was announced, while he only shook his head.</p>
