<p class="mol-para-with-font">The parents of a University of Utah student who was killed by her criminal ex-boyfriend after having her dozens of calls to police ignored have spoken out to slam the college&#8217;s claims that her death could not have been prevented.<br />
Lauren McCluskey, 21, was shot dead in October by her ex-boyfriend, Melvin Brown, in a parking lot.<br />
She had reported Brown to the police for extorting her with revenge porn after they broke up.<br />
Lauren was on the phone to her parents when he grabbed her and dragged her into a car to kill her.</p>

&#8216;And then the line was still open. And then Matt called 9-1-1. I &#8230; I yelled to him and he called 9-1-1,&#8217; Jill told ABC&#8217;s Amy Robach in an interview.<br />
For Matt McCluskey the greatest tragedy surrounding his daughter&#8217;s death &#8220;was the unfairness of it.&#8221;</div>

&#8216;They weren&#8217;t taking her seriously. For one officer, there were 22 calls back and forth and none of them are recorded, because it&#8217;s on the cell phone.&#8217;<br />
Lauren&#8217;s father believes that if the university had performed a background check on Brown, who was also a student, his daughter&#8217;s death would not have happened.</div>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">&#8216;They seemed to show no curiosity about his person who had lied about his age, his name, his &#8230; he was a sex offender.<br />
&#8216;And then they found out that he&#8217;s also a felon. They should&#8217;ve investigated.<br />
&#8216;They would&#8217;ve very quickly found his parole status in one call and it would &#8230; we wouldn&#8217;t be sitting here today,&#8217; he said.<br />
The university said it had identified &#8216;areas of deficiency in the university’s systems and processes and made 30 recommendations for ways to improve them.<br />
&#8216;The university is acting immediately to correct the deficiencies identified in the report,&#8217; it added in a statement.</p>
