<p class="mol-para-with-font">A political activist who once supported Hugo Chavez before denouncing President Nicolás Maduro&#8217;s regime died early Wednesday morning at a hospital in Venezuela after he was reported missing last week.<br />
Alí Domínguez, 27, disappeared last Thursday after attending a meeting to discuss humanitarian aid at the Caracas offices of Venezuelan newspaper El Nacional.<br />
Alí Mauricio Gómez, 31, on Monday sent out a voice note to international media via WhatsApp at 6pm local time, and was last seen active on the social media platform at 6.50pm.<br />
Domínguez, who was a member of the communications department at the Bolivarian University of Venezuela, was found lying unconscious on a highway by firemen and was taken to Domingo Luciani Hospital on Friday.<br />
Domínguez had been beaten and suffered a traumatic brain injury and had his teeth knocked out, among other injuries.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">According to news station VPI TV, Domínguez, the second oldest among seven other siblings, went 15 hours without receiving any medical attention.<br />
Venezuelan National Police reportedly refused to register missing persons report on his family’s behalf and instructed them to reach out to intelligence officials since they deemed it to be a politically sensitive case.<br />

His brother, Jesús Domínguez, made several attempts to search for him at the hospital Sunday and Monday but security staff repeatedly turned them away because they didn&#8217;t have his name in the system.<br />
Jesus Domínguez eventually identified his brother at the hospital where he was in a coma.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Bethania Domínguez, 31, expressed shock, couldn’t believe her ‘hero’ brother had suddenly been taken from her.<br />
Her parents were having a difficult time coping with their tragic loss.<br />
She described her brother as a person who was just fighting for the next person&#8217;s well-being.<br />
‘We never imagined that something like this could happen to my hero,’ Bethania Domínguez said.<br />
‘He was an unblemished worker. He always helped who he could,&#8217; she added.<br />
&#8216;He was young man without any fears. He was the humblest person that I could have met in my life.’</p>
