Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó took to the streets with activist Leopoldo Lopez and a small contingent of heavily armed troops early Tuesday in a bold and risky call for the military to rise up and oust socialist leader Nicolas Maduro.
Tensions were high in the country on Tuesday as violent clashes erupted between protesters and government troops after opposition leader Juan Guaidó urged the military to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro.
Videos emerged on social media Tuesday afternoon showing a violent crackdown on protesters. In one, horrific footage shows armoured vehicles operated by soldiers loyal to the besieged president ploughing into demonstrators in front of La Carlota military airbase in Caracas.

Declaring that the “final phase” of Operation Freedom was underway, Guaidó launched a wave of protests in the crisis-stricken South American country with an early-morning video shot next to the air base in Caracas. He stood next to numerous armed troops and former political prisoner Leopoldo López, who was under house arrest since 2014.
“The moment is now,” Guaidó said in the video.
But Maduro and his allies, including military chiefs, are fighting back what they describe as an attempted coup by a small group of traitors.

Earlier on Tuesday, Guaidó claimed the main unit of the military had joined him and urged the “military family” and public servants to support protesters and “immediately cover the streets” of Venezuela.
