Four men who gang-raped and murdered 23-year-old student Jyoti Singh on a Delhi bus were hanged in a local prison, seven years after they assaulted the college student and her male companion on the night of Dec 16, 2012.
Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh were all hanged in the high-security Tihar prison in Delhi early this morning, seven years after their savage and senseless crime sparked worldwide protests against the rising tide of femicide in India.
The victim’s mother Asha Devi, 51, declared that ‘the beasts have been hanged’ as she made a V-for-victory-sign and said: ‘Finally my daughter got justice after seven years.’
The four men raped and killed the physiotherapy student – who became known as Nirbhaya, meaning ‘Fearless’ in India, in December 2012, and were executed after failing in a series of appeals.
On the day of the murder 23-year-old Jyoti Singh a final year physiotherapy student and her 28-year-old boyfriend, Awnindra, 28, an IT specialist, returning from a night at the movies got on a bus only to end up with Awnindra beaten senseless with a metal bar while the Six men operating the bus dragged Jyoti ro the rear of the vehicle. They delivered a savage beating, and took turns raping her.
The case caused an explosion of anger over the scale of sexual violence in India and eventually led to tougher laws.
