A Utah woman who called emergency services to report that her husband was unconcious in their home possibly because he has a history of alcohol abuse is now facing charges of first-degree murder in his death.
Veronica Vizcarra of Kearns, Utah,arrested on suspicion of killing her husband after the medical examiner told police that the man died from blunt force trauma. Vizcarra told investigators that her husband’s injuries were the result of a fight he had at work two weeks earlier, the arrest affidavit states.
Vizcarra, 30, of Kearns, Utah, was arrested Monday on suspicion of murdering her husband, Carlos Vizcarra-Corona, 33.
Police and EMTs initially responded to a call about an unconscious male at the couple’s home on March 11.
Upon arrival, first responders found Vizcarra-Corona in the home, dead.
Veronica then told investigators that husband had a serious problem with alcohol and consumed too much Tylenol, according to court documents.
Investigators noted that Carlos had been hospitalized for alcohol abuse about four months prior to his death.
After conducting an autopsy, however, the Medical Examiner who had ruled the death a homicide told police on March 12 that while Carlos did have serious medical issues stemming from alcohol use, his actual cause of death was blunt force trauma and a ruptured spleen.
Vizcarra-Corona’s injury the medical examiner said was in a stage of healing, but that it was unable to heal due to the extensive damage.
Questioned about the healing bruises found on her husband’s chest, back and face the day he died, the suspect allegedly told police that the bruises were the result of his getting into a fight at work about two weeks before he died, according to the court documents.
She was however contradicted by Carlos’ sister, who told police that her brother had not been a fight at work.
