<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A ;New Hampshire man Friday guilty to second-degree murder a year after he stabbed to death his wife in front of their two young children. Emerson Figueiredo is facing a ;sentence of 45 years to life for a killing that prosecutors have said showed his &#8216;extreme indifference to the value of human life.&#8217; ;<br>Figueiredo, 43, of Concord, New Hampshire, pled guilty to knowing ;second-degree murder for killing his wife, Nathalia DaPaixao, 35, according to a ;<a rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.doj.nh.gov/news/2020/20201106-emerson-figueiredo.htm">press release</a> ;authorities issued November 6. ;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Figueiredo [photo, right], is accused of fatally slashing his wife at an apartment complex in Concord on ;July 28, 2019.<br>Police responding to 911 calls from the apartment complex where Figueiredo and DaPaixao lived, found ;35-year-old DaPaixao mortally wounded and bleeding on the ground in the parking lot where she&#8217; manages to escape to.. ;<br>She was taken to a local hospital where she later died. An autopsy revealed that she died after sustaining multiple stab wounds.<br>A report by the<a rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.concordmonitor.com/Figueiredo-plea-hearing-37179885"> ;Concord Monitor</a> ;on the plea hearing on November 6, has Assistant Attorney General Jeffery Strelzin highlighting that a week prior to the murder, ;Figueiredo had told their 12-year-old daughter that he loved his wife, but that if she kept insulting him, &#8216;a person like that doesn’t need to live.&#8217; ;<br>The couple had argued over their plans for the day the morning of July 28. The argument escalated and led to Figueiredo stabbing DaPaixao, authorities said ; ;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Strelzin said that the morning of DaPaixao&#8217;s death, an argument had broken out between the husband and wife over their plans for the day. ;<br><a rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" href="https://patch.com/new-hampshire/concord-nh/concord-man-pleads-guilty-second-degree-murder-charge">Patch.com</a> ;reported Strelzin saying that Figueiredo had returned home late from work that morning, which resulted in the family missing church. DaPaixao then wanted him to take the family to the beach, but ;Figueiredo wanted to sleep, instead.<br>At one point during their argument, Strelzin said, they threw their wedding rings at each other and DaPaixao said that she and Figueiredo should get a divorce. ; ; ; ; ;<br>Figueiredo &#8216;was very angry at that point,&#8217; Strezlin said in court, adding that their &#8216;children said they had never seen him so angry, and said something to the effect of, &#8220;You’re not going to ruin my life.&#8221;&#8216; ;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then, Figueiredo allegedly began to beat DaPaixao with one of her shoes, before ;grabbing a kitchen knife and stabbing her. ;<br>DaPaixao was said to have started screaming and apologizing, while the children tried to stop the attack. ;<br>Strezlin said that the 12-year-old daughter managed to give her mother enough time to run from the apartment. ;<br>DaPaixao then managed to escape from her home to the parking lot. When police arrived at the scene, they found her bleeding on the ground</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Figueiredo, however, allegedly took a second knife from the kitchen &#8211; because the first one had broken &#8211; and then ;chased after DaPaixao, catching up with her in the parking lot.<br>Witnesses told police that he began stabbing DaPaixao in the parking lot, striking her so hard that the second knife also broke. ;<br>According to Strezlin, ;Figueiredo also stomped on DaPaixao&#8217;s face ;three times while she lay, wounded, on her back in the parking lot. ;<br>Bystanders tried to help DaPaixao and when police arrived at 11.55am, they detained Figueiredo, later charging him with two accounts of second-degree murder: <br>One charge claiming he ;knowingly caused his wife&#8217;s death and the other alleging he his reckless stabbing showed &#8216;an extreme indifference to the value of human life.&#8217; ;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The autopsy report states that Nathalia DaPaixao suffered at least seven stab wounds before she died, including a cut through her stomach and another one on her neck. One of he wounds fractured a rib and she was also said to have multiple nicks and cuts on her body. ;<br>The couple&#8217;s children &#8211; the 12-year-old daughter and her younger brother &#8211; later told authorities that DaPaixao and ;Figueiredo argued frequently and that &#8216;recently there had been a lot of arguments about money,&#8217; ;Strezlin said in court. ;<br>He added that ;Figueiredo had been &#8216;stressed over money,&#8217; while DaPaixao had &#8216;wanted more financial freedom.&#8217; ;<br>Figueiredo is expected to be sentenced on January 12, 2021. ; ;<br>His plea is capped, meaning the judge will not impose a sentence that is longer than the one requested by the prosecution. Strelzin said he will be suggesting a sentence of 45 years to life in prison for Figueiredo.</p>
