<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A one-year-old boy has been shot dead after police responding to an alleged abduction opened fire on a pickup truck on Thursday near Lindsay in Toronto, Canada. <br>The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says the shooting happened following a domestic dispute at a Trent Lakes home.<br>The incident began when the 33-year-old man allegedly attempted to abduct his son from a Trent Lakes home around 8:45am on Thursday, shortly after a domestic dispute that involved the use of a firearm, according to <a rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" href="https://globalnews.ca/news/7488274/siu-continues-investigation-into-shooting-death-of-abducted-1-year-old-in-kawartha-lakes/">Global News</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From there, a pickup truck sped away from the scene and was located by the Ontario police in Kawartha Lakes. <br>When police attempted to stop the vehicle, it collided with a police vehicle and a civilian vehicle. A cop standing outside of the cruiser sustained serious injuries.<br>After the collision, the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.siu.on.ca/en/news_template.php?nrid=6167">Special Investigations Unit</a> said an ‘”interaction ensued” between the 33-year-old driver of the pickup truck and officers. <br>Three officers then opened fire on the vehicle and the suspect was struck, according to the SIU, the civilian agency that investigates police-involved deaths. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Police officers on hand fired shots at the truck, hitting the occupants.<br>The man was hit and seriously wounded by the shots, and was airlifted to a Toronto hospital in critical condition.<br>Officers found the one-year-old in the back seat of the car, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The official reports said that it is not clear if the fatal shots were fired by the officers or by the alleged abductor.<br>Three police firearms were recovered from the scene, as well as a fourth handgun that was found in the pickup truck.<br>It&#8217;s unclear who fired the shot that resulted in the death of the one-year-old boy</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ontario Provincial Police commissioner Thomas Carrique tweeted, &#8216;As a result of a tragic incident today, one child is dead and two others significantly injured. I ask that @SIUOntario and @YRP be given time to investigate, without speculation on the events as they unfolded. Our thoughts &; prayers are with those that are suffering today.&#8217; <br>The Special Investigations Unit later arrived on the scene of the shooting and took charge in the investigation. <br>&#8216;It&#8217;s too early for us to know why officers fired at the vehicle, and it&#8217;s too early for us to know exactly what transpired,&#8217; said Monica Hudon, communications coordinator of the SIU.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Protesters were seen outside the SIU headquarters in Mississauga, Ontario after the shooting.<br>One held a sign reading: &#8216;End impunity for police brutality.&#8217;<br>Another held a sign saying &#8216;Justice 4 Jamal,&#8217; in response to the police-involved shooting of Jamal Francique, who was killed in January. <br>Witnesses to the alleged abduction say they saw police vehicles chasing a pickup truck after it sped away from a home.<br>&#8216;We heard the first vehicle hit the side of the road, so you could tell it was going really fast,&#8217; witness Michelle Barry said to Global News. &#8216;Almost like a car chase. Then we heard the sirens.&#8217;<br>Local resident Tom Deciccio, who recently moved to the area, said the mother and her family got the disturbing news at his home.<br>“A lady, her mother-in-law, and her little three-year-old came knocking at the door wanting to be let in the house so that they could be safe from someone,” Deciccio told CTV News Toronto.<br>“It was awful because we found that out about three hours later. It was close to noon before the police came and informed the lady that her young baby had been killed. That was very, very disturbing.” <br>Former OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis, said part of the investigation would ascertain who fired the shot that killed the boy.<br>&#8220;There&#8217;s so much unknown about this and a lot of that won&#8217;t be known in the near future because the SIU is investigating the use of force by the OPP officers,&#8221; the CTV News public safety analyst, said.<br>A post-mortem on the child is scheduled for Saturday morning in Toronto, the SIU said. </p>
