A Texas state trooper who was shot in the head and abdomen by a driver he had pulled over to help has died, officials said Wednesday.
Chad Walker, 38, had been on life support after he was shot Friday evening while stopping to help DeArthur Pinson Jr. in his apparently disabled car west of the city of Mexia.
Tropper Walker had not yet come to a stop behind Pinson Jr.’s vehicle on the shoulder of the roadway when the 37-year-old driver got out and opened fire.    
‘Our DPS family is absolutely heartbroken at the loss of one of our brothers in uniform who was killed in the line of duty,’ said DPS Director Steven McCraw. 
‘Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Chad Walker was committed to protecting the people of Texas. His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and we ask that you keep his family, friends and colleagues in your prayers during the difficult days ahead.’

Authorities say that Pinson of Palestine, Texas, shot Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Walker before he had stopped his vehicle during the traffic stop.
Walker was struck in the head and abdomen and was later flown to a hospital in Waco, about 40 miles away.
Authorities launched a manhunt for Pinson and he was reported dead Saturday. Pinson killed himself, according to Limestone County Judge Richard Duncan.
Pinson is said to have seen the patrol car and ‘immediately emerged from the driver’s seat of the disabled vehicle armed with a handgun and fired multiple rounds at Trooper Walker through the patrol unit’s windshield,’ officials said.
He then fled on foot, authorities added. Pinson had been sentenced to 10 years in prison for armed robbery in 2007, ABC reports.

The alleged gunman, identified as 36-year-old Dearthur Pinson of Palestine, Texas, saw the patrol car and “immediately emerged from the driver’s seat of the disabled vehicle armed with a handgun and fired multiple rounds at Trooper Walker through the patrol unit’s windshield.
” Pinson then allegedly walked back to his vehicle, retrieved a backpack and fled the scene on foot,” according to a statement from Todd Snyder, regional director of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
On Saturday night, Pinson was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in a house in Mexia, where he had barricaded himself during a standoff with authorities, according to a statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Officials said Walker had been kept on life support so that his organs could be donated

‘Trooper Walker´s horrific murder is a solemn reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day to keep our communities safe,’ Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement.
Walker had worked in law enforcement since 2003 and had been with DPS since 2015. He is survived by his wife and four children, a 15-year-old son, twin seven-year-old daughters and a two-month-old daughter.
The Texas Department of Public Safety had issued a statement on social media in which they said trooper Walker no longer exhibited ‘signs of viable brain activity’ and that he was now being kept on life support until he can donate his organs.

Governor Abbott added: ‘Our hearts are with the family and friends of Trooper Walker as they grieve his tragic death in the line of duty.
‘Trooper Walker’s horrific murder is a solemn reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day to keep our communities safe. 
‘We will always support law enforcement here in Texas, and we are indebted to the sacrifices that they make to serve and protect their fellow Texans.’
