<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A former detective with the Austin police department was arrested Monday for suspected triple homicide affecting his family. <br>Former Austin cop Stephen Nicholas Broderick, 41, allegedly shot three people near The Arboretum apartment complex in the north-west of the city in what officers called a &#8216;domestic situation&#8217;, on Sunday morning. <br>One of the victims, the suspect&#8217;s estranged wife Amanda Broderick, had said she feared he&#8217;d murder her and their kids last year, eight months before he shot her dead along with their daughter and daughter&#8217;s boyfriend while on bail for allegedly raping a teenage girl in his family. <br>Broderick was arrested on Monday walking along U.S. 290 after two people phoned police at around 7 am. He was taken into custody without incident but had a pistol in his waistband, police said. <br>On Sunday, the former law enforcement officer shot and killed his wife Amanda, 35, his daughter Alyssa, 16, and Alyssa&#8217;s boyfriend, Willie Simmons, then went on the run shortly after 11.42 am.<br>The deaths of Alyssa Broderick and Willie Simmons was confirmed by their school district on Monday.<br>Another child, believed to be Broderick&#8217;s son, who was also in the home at the time was not harmed. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Broderick was a detective within the Travis County Sheriff’s Office until June 2020, when he was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl. While police never named the child sex assault victim, they did say it was a family member whose mother reported the crime. Other sources revealed that Alyssa accused her father of sexually assaulting her when she was 16.<br>In family court, Amanda said she feared he would seek revenge on her and the kids because the allegation had been made public. However, Stephen Broderick was released from custody 16 days after is arrest after posting a $50,000 bond., but he was told not to go within 200 feet of his daughter, Alyssa. <br>In November Amanda Broderick was in court pleading that she is granted a protective order against her estranged husband: &#8216;I&#8217;m afraid he will try to hurt me or my children, because these allegations have come out and he may lose his career. Stephen has prior military experience and is SWAT trained. If he wanted to hurt someone, he would know how,&#8217; she said. <br>However, state district judge Karen Sage agreed to remove the monitor despite Amanda&#8217;s pleas, claiming it was a &#8216;pretty common thing to do&#8217;. </p>

Subsequently, the Travis County District Attorney&#8217;s Office filed a motion to revoke that bond on Sunday, after he&#8217;d already killed his wife, daughter and daughter&#8217;s boyfriend. <br>In a statement confirming Alyssa and Willie&#8217;s deaths, the Elgin School District said: &#8216;We are heartbroken by the news of this senseless tragedy, and we extend our deepest condolences to the families of Willie Simmons III and Alyssa Broderick. <br>&#8216;Although Alyssa withdrew from Elgin ISD back in the fall, she was an Elgin ISD student from 2009 to October 2020.<br>&#8216;She was an excellent student and athlete, enrolled in our Early College High School program and played on our girls’ basketball team. <br>&#8216;Willie was a senior at Elgin High School. <br>&#8216;He was an exceptional young man and leader among his peers. <br>&#8216;Strong, both academically and athletically, he represented the very best of Elgin ISD. <br>&#8216;He was the Captain of our football team; a friend to everyone he met; and most recently, recruited to play football for the University of North Texas,&#8217; Elgin School District said in a statement. <br>Friends of the pair say they were both destined &#8216;for greatness&#8217;. </p>

He also killed Alyssa&#8217;s boyfriend, Willie Simmons before fleeing. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Helicopters, SWAT teams and FBI agents were involved in the hunt for the fugitive killer ex-lawman on Sunday. <br>Another minor child who is connected to the case, believed to be Broderick&#8217;s son, was also in the home at the time. He reportedly, was not harmed in the attack.<br>After shooting the victims in an apartment, Broderick fled the complex. On Monday morning, two people called 911 to report him walking along the road in Manor, Texas, some 14 miles from where the murders happened. <br>Broderick was arrested last June 6 on a charge of sexually assaulting a child, and spent 16 days behind bars before posting a $50,000 bail.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The alleged assault took place in a home in Elgin, a town about 20 miles east of Austin, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. <br>The victim told her mother, who took her for a medical exam that confirmed the abuse.<br>Sunday&#8217;s shooting took place in an apartment complex in The Arboretum neighborhood on the northwest side of Austin.<br>Police Chief Chacon said cops were on the scene four minutes after receiving reports that shots have been fired. <br>He identified the victims as two Hispanic women and one black man. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Describing the suspect, he said: &#8216;We think we know our suspect, Stephen Nicholas Broderick, 41. <br>&#8216;We are concerned he might possibly take a hostage and be himself sheltered somewhere waiting for us to leave.&#8217; <br>He said Broderick is 5 feet, 7 inches (1.7 meters) tall and Black. He was wearing a gray hoodie, sunglasses and a baseball cap. <br>Chief Chacon continued: &#8216;We don&#8217;t know if he&#8217;s on a vehicle or on foot. We are asking individuals to continue sheltering in place because this is still an active.&#8217;<br>Asked if the suspect was a former detective facing child sex charges also called Stephen Broderick, Chief Chacon initially refused to confirm this but later confirmed the suspect &#8216;at one time was a deputy with the Travis County Sheriff&#8217;s office.&#8217;</p>
