<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The &#8216;rabid animal&#8217; ex-Marine who fatally shot a deputy during a traffic stop has been caught after a four-day manhunt, police said. <br>Patrick McDowell, 35, yelled out that he wanted to surrender after he was cornered by police in a concession stand bathroom at Kirsten Higginbotham Sports Complex and a K-9 dog was sent inside, <a rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.news4jax.com/news/local/2021/09/28/man-accused-of-killing-nassau-county-deputy-arrested-near-callahan-after-5-day-search/">News4Jax</a> reported. <br>Four days after the former soldier shot an on-duty cop, he was in custody with Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper telling reporters, &#8216;He crawled out like a baby. Like the coward that he is&#8217;. <br>The murder suspect was then taken to a hospital to be treated for a bite and bullet wounds. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Police revealed they&#8217;d been able to close in on the fugitive after a tip-off that he was at the Callahan baseball field late Tuesday morning. <br>Three hundred officers from state, local and federal agencies joined the search for McDowell who shot Deputy Officer Joshua Moyers, 29, in the back and face early Friday morning. <br>The search intensified after Moyers died on Sunday. <br>Pictures shared by former Deputy Wyatt Garvin on Facebook show McDowell in a red shirt, shorts and socks being arrested by police. <br>His arms appeared to be bleeding from lacerations while his face was covered in mud. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">McDowell served in the marine corp for almost a decade. While on the run people familiar with former serviceman said he was highly skilled to survived in the wild, where he had been hiding for four days. <br>His father has said that after returning from Iraq, the suspect had turned to drugs, missed his VA meetings and started suffering from depression and PTSD. <br>&#8216;I had resigned myself to the fact that he might overdose or take his own life. I never dreamed he would take someone else&#8217;s life&#8230;.I&#8217;m not going to be a hypocrite and plead for his life; he was well aware of the consequences,&#8217; Richard McDowell said about his son. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper had warned residents of the surrounding areas where McDowell was believed to be hiding to be extra careful as he was very dangerous. <br>&#8216;If you are in a home and he breaks in your home and you have a gun, blow him out the door. Because he&#8217;s like a rabid animal. He will kill you,&#8217; said Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said. <br>&#8216;What he did to that deputy was uncalled for and was unnecessary and he needs to pay for it.&#8217; <br>Deputy Moyers, 29, was shot underneath his right eye and on his back. After he succumbed to the injuries on Sunday at a UF Health, the Sheriff&#8217;s office organized a procession for the community to pay their respects to the fallen cop as his body was taken to the funeral home. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A manhunt is being conducted by 300 law enforcement officers from local, state and federal agencies where McDowell is believed to be hiding in Callahan, near Jacksonville.<br>The Nassau County Sheriff&#8217;s Office had offered a $54,000 reward for the capture of McDowell. <br>Officers had been scouring a 3,000-acre area near Jacksonville after finding a flashlight and a hat they thought belonged to McDowell. <br>Late Friday night, the former Marine was driving a stolen minivan with a female passenger when he was pulled over by officer Joshua Moyers, 29, police said. <br>&#8216;something&#8217; caught Moyers attention about McDowell&#8217;s burgundy minivan so he decided to pull him over, Sherriff Leeper said. <br>The driver gave officer Moyers a fake name and did not present a driver&#8217;s license. When Moyers ran a search on the plate, he found out it was registered to another vehicle. <br>&#8216;We found out later on that vehicle was stolen out of Jacksonville,&#8217; Leeper said. <br>&#8216;He didn&#8217;t know that at the time.&#8217; <br>Moyers asked McDowell to get out of the car, but the former soldier stuck his hand out of the window and deliberately shot the deputy twice, once under his right eye and once in the back. </p>

McDowell waited at the scene to ambush officers, police said. <br>A K-9 dog that responded to the scene along with law enforcement was shot twice by McDowell with what police believe was a rifle. Police did not give any further information about the passenger or whether she will be charged. <br>Weapons instructor Del Angelo, who trained McDowell when he worked as a security guard, said he is extremely dangerous and knows how to survive in the wild on his own. <br>&#8216;We just trained him basically for security response and how to use a handgun for self-defense or for protecting an area and he was very accomplished in his use of a handgun,&#8221; Angelo told <a rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.news4jax.com/news/local/2021/09/26/weapons-expert-who-trained-nassau-deputy-shooting-suspect-says-hes-a-survivalist-dangerous/">News4Jax</a>. <br>McDowell suffers from depression, seizures and PTSD, according to The Northeast Florida Fusion Center. <br>He also has a long criminal record. He&#8217;s been arrested several times for driving with a suspended license, attaching a plate that does not belong to the vehicle, offering forged bills, giving a false name to law enforcement officers and for aggravated possession of stolen guns, court record show. <br></p>

His posts often addressed his life in the marines and the fellow marines he had lost in battle. <br>He also shared a picture of an American flag in black and white with the phrase &#8217;til Valhalla,&#8217; commonly used in the military as a cry for soldiers who have parted. <br>Before joining the Marines, McDowell was on probation after being arrested with drug paraphernalia in 1986. <br>Just in 2005, he was arrested for burglary, theft and property damage in at least two separate incidents in Saline County, Illinois, where his Facebook says he grew up. <br>In 2018, he stole from an elderly man and was sent to Veteran Treatment Court for a 179-day sentence. <br>More recently, in 2019, he was charged with possession of cocaine but pled not guilty. <br>McDowell served as a US Marine from 2005 to 2009, and was in the reserve until 2013</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A procession to the funeral home of Deputy Moyers was organized by the Nassau County&#8217;s Sheriff Office. <br>A caravan of ambulance, and police cars and motorcycles could be seen driving from the medical examiners office in Jacksonville to the funeral home. <br>Moyers joined the Nassau County&#8217;s Sheriff&#8217;s Office in 2015 after receiving training at St. Johns River State College. He got engaged in 2019 to Ivy Carter and the pair were planning their wedding. <br>&#8216;Please keep Josh´s family and fiancé in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate this terrible tragedy,&#8217; Leeper wrote on Twitter. <br>Moyers was remembered warmly by a member of the community who shared a time in which he helped her. &#8216;About 5 years ago I woke up around 2am to someone walking around on the front porch of our former house. I was home alone. 911 sent someone immediately and when I opened the door, it was you. I was immediately relieved,&#8217; DeeDee Johnson-Moore wrote on a Facebook post. <br>&#8216;You checked our property thoroughly and spent a few minutes talking to me to help calm me down. Anytime I saw you after that, you always assured me that I could call you any time someone wandered onto my porch,&#8217; she concluded. <br></p>

I know that&#8217;s a small consolation given what a good and decent man he was. If I could change what happened or trade places with him I would,&#8217; Richard McDowell said. <br>&#8216;I had resigned myself to the fact that he might overdose or take his own life.
