<p>South Carolina legal heir Alex Murdaugh will be charged with the 2021 murders of his wife and son this week, one year after they were found shot dead on the family&#8217;s property in a shocking double killing that was the beginning of the end for the dynasty family. <br>The family has been notified that Murdaugh, 54, will be charged this week. A grand jury will be shown evidence on Thursday. <br>It&#8217;s unclear what that evidence is, or why it has taken so long for police to bring charges against Murdaugh. <br>On Tuesday Alex Murdaugh was finally disbarred by South Carolina&#8217;s Supreme Court as he awaits murder charges for allegedly killing his wife and son, and while police revisit two other mysterious deaths that he is connected to. <br>Until this development Alex Murdaugh had been technically allowed to practice law in South Carolina until yesterday, when the court &#8211; upon learning he was facing charges &#8211; finally disbarred him. <br>The legal heir remains in county jail on fraud and embezzlement charges relating to the money he stole from his law firm and a failed attempt to stage his own murder as part of a $10million life insurance scam for his son. <br>Reacting to the travails of a member of the dynasty, the larger Murdaugh family has said they simply &#8216;want the truth&#8217;. </p>

<p>Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were found dead in their family home last summer in a mystifying crime that was the beginning of a long, legal saga for the prominent South Carolina family. <br>Since then, Alex has been charged with trying to commit life insurance scams and questions have arisen over the family&#8217;s dark past. According to police the disgraced South Carolina legal heavyweight, ‘hired hitman to kill him for $10M life insurance policy that would pay out to [surviving]son [Buster]’<br>Alex Murdaugh&#8217;s wife Maggie, 52, and younger son Paul, 22, were found shot dead near the dog kennels on the grounds of the family home on June 7. Maggie was killed with an assault rifle. Paul was peppered with a shotgun. Both were shot multiple times. </p>

<p>A weeping Alex Murdaugh called 911, screaming that he&#8217;d just returned home to find half of his family murdered. No other suspects have ever been named and the State Law Enforcement Division has not made public any possible culpabilities for the bereaved husband and father. <br>In the immediate aftermath, it emerged that Murdaugh had embezzled money from his law firm to fund his opioid addiction. <br>He then tried to stage his own murder in a life insurance scam to benefit his surviving son, Buster, hiring would-be hitman Curtis Smith to shoot him on the side of the road.</p>

<p>In the months before her murder, Maggie Murdaugh, a regular fixture in Charleston society, had reportedly been meeting with divorce attorneys. Maggie and the couple&#8217;s second son Paul, were found shot dead on the grounds of the family home on June 7. Both shot multiple times.<br>Friends said she had become embarrassed that her checks at charity luncheons were bouncing.<br>It has been alleged that she had also discovered that her husband had squandered their money on prescription pills. <br>&#8221;She confronted him about money more than once and his response was always the same, &#8221;Leave it to me. I&#8217;ll figure it out just like I did the last time,&#8221;&#8216; one source revealed. </p>

<p>A constellation of past misdeed, it has been reported, contributed to this downward spiral.<br>Alex Murdaugh was drowning in debt. His account balances at one bank were negative hundreds of thousands of dollars.<br>The family was being sued for the death of 19-year-old Mallory Beach, a teenager who drowned after being thrown from a boat Paul was driving drunk in 2019. <br>In light of the murders of Maggie and Paul, the family&#8217;s dark history came into question. <br>It emerged that in 2018, the Murdaugh family housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, died three weeks after falling in their home. Satterfield&#8217;s sons sued the Murdaugh family for insurance money, ironically which their mother&#8217;s employer encouraged them to do. Satterfield&#8217;s survivors later sued Murdaugh directly, claiming that he stole the insurance payout he promised them. </p>

<p>The other members of the family had their own record of brow raising incidents. Before he was shot dead, Paul Murdaugh was awaiting trial in a fatal boating accident that killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach. <br>He was driving the boat drunk when it crashed and she was thrown into the water. <br>Back in July, 2015, when 19-year-old Stephen Smith was found dead near the family&#8217;s estate, three miles from his abandoned car, with horrific and disfiguring head injuries and a dislocated right shoulder, investigators at the time received anonymous tips suggesting that Murdaugh&#8217;s sons Paul and Buster were persons of interest in the fate of the gay teenager, according to documents obtained by <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.fitsnews.com/2021/06/18/a-slap-in-the-face-update-in-the-stephen-smith-case-and-murdaugh-murders/" target="_blank">FITSNews</a>. Smith was classmates with Buster Murdaugh and they were rumored to have been involved.<br>Neither brother was ever named a suspect in the case, and police also investigated other persons of interest. No charges have ever been brought.<br>The medical examiner concluded that the teen ran out of gas and was struck by the side mirror of a passing truck, but Smith&#8217;s mother has always believed it was a hate crime.</p>

<p>Murdaugh&#8217;s world caved in after the deaths of his wife and son. This was followed days later by the death of his father, a long term legal luminary in the Carolinas who had served as an attorney in the area for decades &#8211; just like his father before him. <br>In the absence of any other suspects, suspicion quickly turned to family head who found the bodies, but his family stood by him. His brothers appeared on Good Morning America to protest his innocence. <br>The family put up a $100,000 reward for information that could lead to Maggie and Paul&#8217;s killers. <br>In a statement at the time, a grieving Alex said: &#8216;I want to thank everyone for the incredible love and support that we have received over the last few weeks. <br>&#8216;Now is the time to bring justice for Maggie and Paul. Buster and I, along with Maggie&#8217;s mother, father and our entire family, ask that anyone with helpful information should immediately call the SLED tip line or Crime Stoppers.&#8217; </p>

<p>It wasn&#8217;t until September that the tide started to turn against Murdaugh. <br>On September 3, he quietly resigned from the law firm he&#8217;d served for years, Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth, &; Detrick.<br>On September 4, Murdaugh called 911 reporting that he had just been shot on the side of the road. <br>He said he had no idea who had attacked him, and claimed it happened while he was changing a tire. <br>In his 911 call, he told police he was &#8216;bleeding&#8217; from the head. <br>On September 6, his resignation from the law firm became public along with the allegations that he had stolen millions over the years. </p>

<p>He entered rehab at the same time, revealing a crippling addiction to prescription painkillers. <br>Curtis Smith, the hitman he allegedly hired to kill him, was then arrested and his insurance scam plot was revealed. <br>Smith told police that Alex wanted him to kill him and have it look like a murder so that his surviving son, Buster, would receive a $10million life insurance payout. <br>Outed, Murdaugh surrendered himself to police in September. <br>Weeks later, SLED announced it was criminally investigating the death of Gloria Satterfield, the Murdaughs&#8217; housekeeper who died after a fall in 2018, and claims that Alex stole insurance money that was intended for her children. </p>

<p>He was then charged with theft for allegedly stealing the $3million set aside for the pair. <br>In recent weeks, Murdaugh has been communicating with Buster through phone calls from the county jail, where he has complained about conditions. <br>But in one call from December, Buster was more concerned about the authorities lawfully carrying out warrants than he was with the extent of his father&#8217;s alleged crimes. <br>&#8216;I understand that you’ve done some illegal s**t,&#8217; Buster told his father, to which he shot back: &#8216;<em>Allegedly </em>done some illegal stuff.&#8217; </p>
