<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Italian aristocrat Matteo Costacurta is accused of shooting another underworld figure involved in a case of extortion in Rome. <br>The Italian aristocrat who played in the same polo club as Prince Harry has been charged with acting as a professional assassin. <br>Matteo Costacurta&#8217;s arrest appears to have untangled a web of criminal agreements in Rome linking underworld figures who referred to each other with ecclesiastical nicknames, including &#8216;The Pope&#8217; and &#8216;St Peter&#8217;. <br>Costacurta, 38, is the scion of a noble Venetian family, and the salacious nature of the trial has grabbed the attention of the public in Italy. In the underworld they called him &#8220;San Pietro&#8221; because in addition to the villas and houses, he owned and managed an ab&;b in the Vatican area. <br>However, in his other life he was a hitman working for Albanian gangster, Elvis Demçe, the godfather of the new Roman crime family, successors to Carminati and Diabolik. <br>Costacurta was arrested on Sunday 31 July.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Costacurta was a member of the Roma Polo Club, founded in the 1930s and the oldest of its kind in Italy. The Polo loving aristocrat is accused of shooting another underworld figure involved in a case of extortion in Rome. He was one of five people arrested when police penetrated an encrypted communications network.<br>The wealthy nobleman is said to be linked to the Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari (NAR), a right-wing terrorist group that killed 85 people when it bombed the Bologna Centrale railway station in 1980 during Italy&#8217;s Years of Lead.<br>The murder-for-hire plot in Rome started when alleged underworld figure, Alessio Marzani, reportedly demanded hush money for hiding drugs that belonged to another crime boss and staying silent about it while in jail.<br>Marzani was allegedly asking another person, Daniele Gallarello, for money in exchange for keeping quiet, with a demand of $1,018 [€1,000] per month.<br>Costacurta is accused of accepting a $30,523 [€30,000] payment to execute the contract on Marzani to halt the extortion attempt. <br>The hit was brokered by drug trafficker Daniele Gallarello, who passed the contract to crime boss Elvis Demçe, an Albanian now a major figure in the Roman underworld, and Daniele Corvesi, a former youth player with elite soccer club Lazio FC.<br>After accepting 45,000 euros the pair hired Costacurta and another man to kill Alessio Marzani.<br>They assassins ambushed Marzani on October 22, 2021, in Acilia. With one man holding a gun and the other steering the motorcycle, two men sped through the town of Acilia before spotting Mazani, slowing down, and shooting him in the chest. <br>Although he was hit in the arm and the left side of the chest, the target managed to escape the assassins to take refuge inside a nearby building, according to <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://roma.repubblica.it/cronaca/2022/08/01/news/matteo_costacurta_nobile_killer_mafia_albanese-360001257/" target="_blank">La Repubblica</a>. A resident opened a door to allow him inside, while a neighbor called the carabinieri, to report the shooting.<br>Responding officers transported the injured Marzani to San Camillo Hospital. He was discharged after 45 days after undergoing surgery.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Among the alleged organizers of the hit was Alessandro Corvesi, a former youth player with professional soccer club, Lazio. When taken into custody, police allegedly found 2kg of cocaine on Corvesi.<br>At his ongoing trial, Costacurta&#8217;s defense lawyer is making the case that his client has turned away from the excesses of his youth. &#8216;Costacurta has recently been in Africa with the nuns who work on the projects of the Community of St Egidio. Does that seem like the profile of a killer?&#8217; his lawyer asked the court, according to <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://roma.corriere.it/notizie/cronaca/22_agosto_01/matteo-costacurta-chi-principe-sicario-criminalita-organizzata-59776b3c-1191-11ed-987b-bc2e15ee3b43.shtml" target="_blank">the Corriere della Sera</a>. <br>However, The Times quoted a coordinator of the charity&#8217;s projects in Africa saying she had never heard of Costacurta. <br>Judge Andrea Fanelli, who is overseeing the trial, described Costacurta as possessing a &#8216;malice that seemed to go beyond the economic objectives of his criminal activity&#8217;. <br>Elvis Demçe, who, &#8216;who considered himself God,&#8217; according to police, was recently arrested after a vicious campaign that destroyed two rival mafia families in the Italian capital. <br>Demçe and Corvesi, have been charged with tempted murder.</p>
