<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rapper Willie Junior Maxwell, better known by his showbiz name, Fetty Wap has been sentenced to six years in prison for drug dealing at the height of his fame. <br>Fetty Wap, 31, from Paterson, New Jersey, was arrested in October 2021 for being a &#8216;kilo-level&#8217; drug dealer in Long Island and his native New Jersey. Initially released on a $500,000 bail bond, Wap has been in custody since last August when his bail was revoked after &#8216;threatening to kill a man over Facetime and brandishing a gun at him&#8217;. <br>He had been accused of conspiring to possess and distribute more than 100 kilograms or 220 pounds of heroin, fentanyl and crack cocaine between June 2019 and June 2020, across Long Island and New Jersey.<br>The rapper was one of five people charged in the case, and is reported to have personally dealt 25 kilograms of drugs across the Garden State, according to federal prosecutors. <br>At sentencing Wednesday, Wap apologized for to his loved ones for the actions that landed him in prison: &#8216;I hurt my community, people who look up to me. My family and myself,&#8217; he said to the courtroom during sentencing. <br>&#8216;I am truly sorry for any pain I caused.&#8217;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Appearing before Judge Joanna Seybert at the federal court in Central Islip, New York, on Wednesday, Fetty Wap received a sentence of six years &#8211; one year longer than the minimum &#8211; and five years of post-release supervision, in addition.<br>The Judge chiding the convict said: &#8216;Despite your background and all you overcame, you threw it all away.&#8217; <br>The rapper, best known for his 2015 hit &#8216;Trap Queen,&#8217; apologized in the court room: &#8216;Me being selfish in my pride put me in this position today.&#8217; <br>&#8216;I hurt my community, people who look up to me. My family and myself,&#8217; he said. &#8216;I am truly sorry for any pain I caused.&#8217;</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Wap was arrested and his bail revoked<strong> on August 8, 2022 for allegedly threatening to kill a man while on FaceTime</strong> and brandishing a gun at him</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fetty Wap was initially arrested in October 2021 and charged with participating in a drug smuggling conspiracy involving heroin, fentanyl and other drugs.<br>The scheme involved using the U.S. Postal Service and cars with hidden compartments to transport drugs from the West Coast to Long Island, according to prosecutors, where they were stored for distribution to dealers on Long Island and in New Jersey. <br>As part of the investigation, police seized $1.5million in cash and multiple weapons from a series of homes. <br>Wap pled guilty in August to a top charge of conspiracy to distribute and possess controlled substances pertaining to cocaine. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The charge carried a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison.<br>Defense attorney Elizabeth Macedonio asked the judge to recommend to the Bureau of Prisons that he serve his sentence at a prison in the Northeast, but did not specify a particular prison. <br>&#8216;This is a sad day,&#8217; his defense attorney said. <br>&#8216;This is a kid from Paterson, New Jersey who made it out.&#8217; <br>Prosecutors had argued for a longer term for the rapper in a letter to the judge last week, claiming that he used his celebrity status and his song &#8216;Trap Queen&#8217; to push and glamorize selling drugs to young people.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The prosecutors claimed &#8216;Trap Queen,&#8217; used children as extras in the song&#8217;s music video. <br>&#8216;Young people who admire the defendant and are considering selling drugs need to be sent a message that selling drugs is not a glamorous lifestyle and, if they participate in that trade, they will receive lengthy prison sentences,&#8217; Breon Peace, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District said, asking for sentence between seven and nine years.<br>The rapper was arrested at the Rolling Loud music festival at Citi Field in October 2021 moments before he was due to go on stage. <br>In court, he admitted to conspiring to distribute cocaine, telling the judge: &#8216;I agreed with other people to distribute cocaine. &#8216;I knew the conduct was illegal.&#8217; <br>He pled guilty August 2022 and had been facing up to 40 years in prison. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fetty&#8217;s lawyer blamed the pandemic for the rapper&#8217;s &#8216;bicoastal drug distribution organization&#8217; that led to his arrest, in a memorandum sent last week on behalf of the New Jersey rapper. <br>Macedonio filed the memorandum in federal court arguing for Wap to receive the <a href="https://www.xxlmag.com/fetty-wap-selling-drugs-pandemic-requests-five-year-sentence/">mandatory minimum of five years</a> rather than the 87 to 108 months that the prosecutor was seeking.<br>The defense claimed the Covid-19 pandemic led Fetty to a life of crime: &#8216;In or about 2020, with the coming of the worldwide pandemic, things began to change for Mr. Maxwell. There were no opportunities to perform, thus his income was severely limited,&#8217; Macedonio wrote to the sentencing judge, pleading for leniency.<br>&#8216;He was sued personally, was going through a divorce, and was involved with a tour manager who was stealing from him. While the bills kept coming in, the money to pay them was running out. At or about the same time, Mr. Maxwell lost his grandparents and several other people who were close to him.&#8217;<br>Fetty Wap also struggled with the loss of his 4-year-old daughter Lauren Maxwell, who died of complications from a heart defect she had since birth, on June 24, 2021. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The &#8216;Trap Queen&#8217; rapper, who is blind in one eye due to glaucoma, hit number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2014 with his ballad to strippers, money and dealing crack on the gritty streets of Paterson. The song had over 130million plays on SoundCloud and become a platinum record.<br>In September 2015, Fetty released his debut album called Fetty Wap which made it to the top spot on the Billboard 200 that year. That same year he became the first rapper to have three top 20 songs on Billboard since Eminem in 2013. <br>Throughout his career, he has earned five awards and two Grammy nomination. Fetty has said he owned 37 cars, 10 houses, 14 apartments and had $2.5 million in jewelry in 2021, according to <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.nj.com/entertainment/2020/02/shop-queen-nj-rapper-fetty-wap-says-he-owned-37-cars-10-houses.html" target="_blank">NJ.com. </a>His net worth is reportedly between $1 and $10million. <br>But his lawyer said he struggled to keep up his lifestyle and became depressed. <br>&#8216;His judgment became impaired. Desperate to keep up with his financial obligations, Mr. Maxwell became involved in the instant offense for a few months in the spring of 2020,&#8217; Macedonio said. <br>Yet Fetty&#8217;s recent arrest is not his first run-in with the law. </p>
