<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The dramatic manhunt for the estranged son of Nashville&#8217;s police chief wanted in connection to the shooting of two officers at a Dollar General ended after a car chase and the suspect taking his own life. <br>Last weekend, John Drake Jr. shot two officers outside the LaVergne, Tennessee, store. The officers responded to shop 20 miles southeast of Nashville for a reported car theft. <br>Nashville Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said on Tuesday night, the suspect asked a couple for ride, when they refused, he pulled a gun on them and stole their car. <br>Later that night, the car was seen in the Edgware section of the city. Police pursued Drake for a short period when he crashed the car and ran into the backyard of a nearby home. <br>After Drake ran into a shed, officers said that they heard a gunshot. Once inside, the chief&#8217;s son was found dead. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Drake, who had been wanted on two counts of attempted first-degree murder, was the son of Metro Nashville Police Department Chief John Drake. <br>The chief issued a statement Saturday confirming his son was the suspect in the shooting. Drake Jr had been estranged from his father for some time, according to the senior Drake.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8216;Despite my efforts and guidance in the early and teenage years, my son, John Drake Jr., now 38-years-old, resorted to years of criminal activity and is a convicted felon,&#8217; Drake said.<br>&#8216;He has not been a part of my life for quite some time. He now needs to be found and held accountable for his actions.<br>&#8216;I hope that anyone who sees him or has information about him will contact law enforcement immediately.&#8217;<br>Officers Ashely Boleyjack and Gregory Kern were investigating a stolen vehicle outside the Dollar General store when they struggled with the suspect, who pulled a handgun and shot them, said LaVergne Police Chief Christopher Moews. <br>Both officers were treated and released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The law enforcement manhunt for John Drake Jr. began on Tuesday after he stole a car at gunpoint from a couple at their home southeast of downtown LaVergne on Tuesday night.<br>Drake asked a man and woman in front of a home for a ride and when they were unable or unwilling to give him a ride, he pulled out a gun and robbed them of the car in the driveway and fled.<br>Police spotted the car a short time later and followed it to the Edgehill area south of downtown, where it crashed. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Video shows Drake cruising down the street before smashing into the back of a parked car.<br>Search lights illuminate the vehicle before Drake Jr is seen darting out of the car and running as a police cruiser quickly follows behind. <br>Ultimately the suspect flees to a shed behind a home. Shortly after the chasing police officers surrounded the area, when a gun shot rings out.<br>The officers found Drake dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation [TBI], said in a statement posted on social media.<br>TBI will investigate Drake&#8217;s death at District Attorney Glenn Funk&#8217;s request and a full autopsy will be performed as a part of the investigation, the agency said. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a related development LaVergne Police Chief Christopher Meows, in a statement posted on social media, thanked all the officers involved in Tuesday night&#8217;s pursuit for their &#8216;steadfastness and dedication to seeing this case through&#8217; and said their prayers are with Chief Drake and his family.<br>Mayor Freddie O&#8217;Connell issued a statement in support of the police chief.<br>&#8216;My heart goes out to Chief Drake, his family, and the two wounded LaVergne police officers. I know that despite our best efforts, including in their early years, we can&#8217;t be responsible for the choices of family members,&#8217; O&#8217;Connell said.<br></p>
