After nearly 12 hours of deliberation, a jury in Oak Ridge found Finnegan guilty on Monday of first-degree felony murder in Paxton’s death.
He was also found guilty on 10 other counts, including criminally negligent homicide, multiple aggravated kidnapping charges, attempted aggravated rape, aggravated rape, two conspiracy charges, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.
He was found not guilty on two charges of conspiracy to commit premeditated murder and aggravated rape with bodily injury.
Finnegan at one point, wiped away tears as witnesses testified about the kidnapping and murder of Paxton whose frozen body was found under his bed.
Finnegan’s partner, 26-year-old Rebecca Dishman, told officers that Finnegan killed Jennifer Paxton , strangling her with a string over an extended period of time, taking breaks, and pausing to smoke.
Finnegan then Paxton’s body was kept in a freezer in his bedroom for approximately eight months after he killed her.
He would view her corpse for sexual pleasure, Dishman told police.
Paxton was the ideal victim for Finnegan, prosecutor Kevin Allen told jurors Friday.
She was a homeless drug addict who sold her body to make money.
Investigators believe Paxton was strangled to death in December 2019. Finnegan’s partner, 26-year-old Rebecca Dishman, told officers that Finnegan killed Paxton, strangling her with a string over an extended period of time, taking breaks, and pausing to smoke.
By the summer of 2020, Dishman wanted to get away from the apartment in Oak Ridge and Finnegan, according to testimony.
As she fled Aug. 5, 2020, with a neighbor, she confided about Paxton in the freezer, leading to a call to the authorities.
Dishman already pled guilty to murder in September 2023.
She was sentenced to Life in Prison for murder, with an additional 50 years, to be served in entirety, on two counts of Rape of a Child. As a condition of the plea, Dishman was required to cooperate with the State of Tennessee in its death penalty case against her co-defendant Sean S. Finnegan

Her first person recount of the crime apparently helped with the swift conviction of the killer.
On Wednesday the judge announced Finnegan’s sentence, stating that the convict would be transferred to the state penitentiary in Nashville for execution by lethal injection.
Following the verdict, Paxton’s family was seen crying and embracing each other in the courtroom. Finnegan shook his attorney’s hands, thanking them for their work on the case, after everyone had been dismissed.
‘Sean Finnegan will never be free again,’ defense attorney Forrest Wallace told Anderson County jurors on August 20 at the start of his sentencing hearing. He noted that the minimum sentence for first-degree murder was 51 years, and Finnegan was already 56. ‘Do the math,’ he said.

Prosecutor Kevin Allen countered, advocating for the death penalty. ‘Sean Finnegan must be given the same amount of mercy they, [Finnegan and Rebecca Dishman], gave Jennifer Paxton,’ he said.
The defendant remained emotionless throughout the case until the verdict was announced, only stirring when his brother’s ex-wife, Roxanne Mundy, testifying on his behalf, detailed Finnegan’s abusive childhood, where he was a victim of physical and sexual violence.
