<p>Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife appeared to have been dead for &#8220;quite a while&#8221; when the couple and their dog were found dead on Wednesday afternoon at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.<br>Retired Hollywood star Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 64, were found partially-mummified at the couple&#8217;s $3.3 million mansion, with pills strewn in their bathroom. <br>An arrest warrant revealed Arakawa, 64, was found decomposed with bloating on her face and mummification in her hands and feet.<br>Sheriff&#8217;s deputies said Hackman was found to have the same signs of decomposition as his wife. </p>

<p>The couple, who had been married since 1991, were found dead alongside their dog after a neighbor who had not seen the couple for days called police to conduct a welfare check at the couple&#8217;s luxurious Santa Fe mansion on Wednesday at 1:46pm Mountain Time. <br>While the bodies were found Wednesday afternoon, along with a dead dog. Two other, healthy dogs were discovered roaming the property &#8211; one inside and one outside.<br>Deputies positively <a href="https://www.kob.com/news/top-news/actor-gene-hackman-wife-found-dead-in-santa-fe-home/">identified</a> the deceased as Hackman and Arakawa until Thursday morning.<br>Hackman was discovered wearing grey tracksuit bottoms, a blue long-sleeve T-shirt and brown slippers. Sunglasses and a walking cane were next to the body. Detectives suspect that the actor had fallen suddenly.<br>Deputies then spoke to Roland Lowe Begay and Jesse Kesler, two maintenance workers at the home. The men told officers that they rarely saw Hackman and Arakawa but talked over text and phone with her. However, they hadn’t heard from her in “approximately two weeks.”<br>Police said that the circumstances of their death were &#8220;suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation&#8221;. A search warrant was raised because the person who called emergency services found the front door of the property open.<br>But the detective observed no sign of forced entry into the home. Nothing appeared out of place inside the home. According to the detective, there was no indication the home had been rummaged through, or that any items had been removed.</p>

<p>Under the circumstances, the identities of Hackman and Arakawa were not released for nearly 12 hours, with details of how the couple were found pending a little more digging. <br>Both appear to have been dead for some time. Begay and Kesler told investigators they hadn&#8217;t seen them for two weeks. <br>A detective noted in the search warrant that &#8216;the death of the two deceased individuals to be suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation.&#8217;<br>Arakawa was discovered lying on the bathroom floor of the couple&#8217;s home on her right side, with an open prescription bottle of pills scattered across a nearby countertop. No indication has been given as to what the pills were and whether they had been prescribed to Hackman or his wife. <br>A space heater was found next to Arakawa&#8217;s head, which investigators believe may have fallen. <br>Hackman was found dead in a mud room off the couple&#8217;s kitchen, the warrant said. He was fully clothed in lounging gear, his sunglasses and walking cane next to his body. The officers said the findings suggest that Hackman may have died of a sudden fall. Arakawa was also casually dressed in sweatpants and sweatshirt. <br>Hackman&#8217;s daughter Elizabeth had speculated earlier on Thursday that her father and stepmother may have been killed by a carbon monoxide leak. Firefighters called to the property found no signs of a gas leak, a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning, <br>One of the couple&#8217;s three dogs, a German Shepherd, was found dead about 10 to 15 feet away from Arakawa in a closet just off the bathroom. The couple&#8217;s two other dogs were unharmed.<br>One of the surviving dogs was found alive close to Betsy&#8217;s body, with a second roaming the property. </p>
