A Missouri teenager who had been missing for months after she vanished without a trace from her hometown was discovered hiding behind the door of a cluttered closet in Colorado, nearly 700 miles away.
The terrified 16-year-old girl was found alive inside the home of a convicted sex offender who police say snatched her away, isolated her from the world, and forced her into a life of captivity.
The girl’s nightmare only ended after she managed to send a desperate Instagram message to a friend. the tip led investigators to the Colorado home where she was being held – for months – against her will.
The house was reportedly being held by a convicted predator.
The suspect is identified as 44-year-old Maximilian Bondrescu, a 320-pound registered sex offender with a prior conviction for communication with a minor for immoral purposes.
The teen had essentially disappeared with her phone silent, her social media dark while her worried family had no clue as to her whereabouts.
Bondrescu has been hit with a slew of charges including second-degree kidnapping, second degree assault, sexual assault on a child, false imprisonment of a minor, harboring of a minor, child abuse, obstruction of a peace officer and failure to properly register as a sex offender.
He remains locked in the Larimer County Jail on a $500,000 cash bond.
For months, there had been no sign of the teen, whose father first reported her missing on December 6, 2024, after receiving a call from her school that she never showed up for class.

The 16-year-old victim was found April 18, in a closet at a home owned by Bondrescu on the 800 block of Warren Landing in Fort Collins, Colorado, four months after she was reported missing in Missouri

Her friends at the time told police missing girl had toyed with the idea of running away to Colorado. However, as the weeks dragged into months with no progress, hopes of recovery began to fade, until April 15.
Her Instagram account, dormant since her disappearance, flickered back to life as she sent out a message which saved her life. That ping led investigators to track the IP address where the account was accessed.
The digital trail ended at a residence in Fort Collins, Colorado.
The property is owned Bondrescu. His record as a convicted sex offender prompted an immediate response by police.
When Fort Collins police arrived to execute a search warrant on April 18, Bondrescu flatly denied any knowledge of the missing girl. Unconvinced cops insisted on searching for the missing child at the residence on the 800 block of Warren Landing. The teenager was found alive in Bondrescu’s bedroom. The frightened teen was naked and hiding in a closet.
Giving cops an account of the harrowing experience, she told investigators she was being held against her will. The arrest affidavit details how Bondrescu kept her isolated, disguised appearing in public, monitored, and dependent on him. He had destroyed her means of communication on arrival and seized her ID to ensure she was essentially invisible and powerless.

Bondrescu the girl said, forced her to work for his snow removal business, FoCo Sno GO, shoveling snow. She would be masked to hide her identity and age, while performing the arduous task

According to the affidavit, the girl said she began communicating with Bondrescu in November 2024 on an app called ‘Boo,’ later shifting their conversations to Snapchat.
The pair plotted her escape. Bondrescu rented a car, drove through the night, and picked her up in Missouri under cover of darkness. In a deliberate attempt to leave no trace the fleeing pair avoided toll roads.
Arriving Colorado, Bondrescu allegedly wrapped the girl in a blanket and carried her inside his home so that no one would spot her.
On Bondrescu orders, the girl dyed her hair. She wore a mask and sunglasses on the rare occasion she ventured outside the house, something that happened only ‘a handful of times’ during the months she was held captive, the girl said. Bondrescu allegedly forced her to work for his snow removal business, FoCo Sno GO, shoveling snow while masked to hide her identity and age.
To complete the isolation he took away her learner’s permit, student ID, and the phone she had brought with her, smashing it so she could not reach anyone for help, she told officers.
However, her captor slipped when he gave the girl one of his old phones, unaware that it still had Instagram installed. Using that device, police said, the girl ping her friend, not knowing if anyone would see it, but ultimately leading to her rescue.
The bloom of the illicit relationship wore off within a month. By January or February, the girl told investigators, she was pleading with Bondrescu to let her return home. His response was that she couldn’t leave because he couldn’t afford it.
When asked what she thought would happen if she ran, the girl simply replied that she didn’t know anyone in Colorado and had no way out.
According to the Colorado court records, Bondrescu’s criminal past wasn’t unknown. His prior conviction in 2019, for communication with a minor for immoral purposes, should have made him subject to strict monitoring, which he avoided by failing to properly register as a sex offender.
But sans the strict monitoring, history repeats as he currently faces charges of grooming and abducting another child, alongside charges of kidnapping and sexual assault.
