Texas teen Karmelo Anthony is facing criminal indictment in Texas after a Grand Jury formally charged him in connection to the death of Austin Metcalf.
Karmelo Anthony, 18, who admitted to stabbing and killing Metcalf, another high school athlete at a track meet in Texas, was indicted on a first-degree murder charge on Tuesday.
Austin Metcalf, 17, bled out in the arms of his brother Hunter after Karmelo Anthony, another 17-year-old and member of an opposing team, attacked him in the bleachers of David Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco on April 2, 2024.
Anthony insisted he was acting in self-defense when he knifed Metcalf, however, he’s never explained why he had a weapon at an event on school property.

However, Tuesday, he was formally charged by a grand jury in the crime that has drawn national attention over race and privilege.
The twins’ father in a statement after the indictment was handed down expressed his belief that: ‘justice will be served’ for his late son.
‘I look forward to the forthcoming trial. But it will never bring my son back,’ Jeff Metcalf said.
Frisco, Texas police have said the incident stemmed from Metcalf asking Anthony to leave his team tent since he didn’t go to the same school.

Karmelo Anthony [left] stabbed Austin Metcalf, [right], and later died after a confrontation with at an April 2 track meet in Frisco, Texas on April 2, 2024. Both were 17-year-old high school athletes at the time

The indictment comes weeks after the local district attorney began presenting evidence to a grand jury, asking jurors to uphold indictment on the charge of first-degree murder, same as the charge police originally brought against the teenage murder suspect.
‘With that indictment, the case now moves formally into the court system.
‘We know this case has struck a deep nerve, here in Collin County and beyond,’ the Collin County District Attorney, Greg Willis, said in a press release issued Tuesday afternoon.
‘That’s understandable. When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core.’
Grand jury proceedings are held behind closed doors, and unlike most court hearings, are not open to the public.

However, Anthony’s a defense attorney was able to present a packet with evidence Anthony wanted the jurors to see.
The murder suspect learned about the indictment shortly before the news was released to media Tuesday afternoon: ‘A ham sandwich can be indicted in America, right,’ said a member of his defense team in explaining that their client had been prepped not to rule out this outcome, adding ‘Right now, this is the first day of Karmelo pretty much preparing to defend himself in the court of law.’
Footage of the stabbing released by the Frisco Independent School District in the last week.

Hunter Metcalf seen [left], with father Jeff, and twin brother Austin was at the athletic meet with Austin when the stabbing happened. Austin bled out in his arms

The video which was only shown to media but not to the public, recorded on a fixed camera at David Kuykendall Stadium, did not show any fighting, pushing or physical altercation between the boys prior to the knifing.
Instead, the clip starts with showing several people sitting under the Memorial High School team tent.
Without any kind of apparent escalation, people can be seen running and walking away from the tent.
Later, what appears to be Austin Metcalf’s body is moved out of the stadium bleachers to a walkway near the bottom of the seating area.

Police investigate the scene under the tent where the stabbing took place.
The surveillance which reportedly, shows no build up altercation or evidence that Anthony was in imminent danger leading to the attack, appears to challenge the self-defense claim of the murder suspect.
Following his arrest Anthony spent nearly two weeks in jail before a judge agreed to reduce his bond from $1million to $250,000, allowing him to await trial under house arrest wearing a GPS monitor.
After the indictment he remains under house arrest at a secret location after persuading a judge that his safety was at risk following threats he received while living in a gated community.
