<p>The man who shot dead two firefighters in an ambush in Idaho was identified Monday as 20-year-old Wess Roley. <br>Roley’s body was found near his weapon at the scene of a fire he started Sunday afternoon to lure unsuspecting first responders to the scene, according to law enforcement sources.<br>He ended up killing two responding firefighters and critically wounding a third, authorities said.<br>It is unclear whether Roley was eventually killed by a cop’s bullet or took his own life, Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris told reporters at a press conference.<br>On Sunday afternoon firefighters responding to an &#8216;intentionally set fire&#8217; in Idaho, came under attack with fatal consequences.<br>Police on Sunday evening recovered the body of the suspect who they allege deliberately started a brush fire to lure firefighters to an ambush on a mountain in Kootenai County, before shooting two of them dead and severely wounding a third fireman. <br>The gunman now identified as Weiss Roley was found dead near his weapon, a sniper type rifle, on Canfield Mountain outside of Coeur d&#8217;Alene. <br>Law enforcement was directed by the killer&#8217;s cellphone signal to his in location. He engaged cops in an exchange of gunfire, but was later found dead close to his gun. The suspect&#8217;s body was pulled away from the scene just as the blaze began to spread across Canfield Mountain. <br>However, it remains unclear if the sniper death was suicide or he was killed in the exchange with cops.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size"><strong>Massive police officers and firefighters who responded to the scene of a brush fire in Kootenai County, Idaho where fighters were shot, killed and injured on Sunday afternoon</strong></p>



<p>The fire was first reported at around 1.21pm. Harrowing calls monitored by the fire department scanner revealed the uncharacteristic danger first responders faced on arrival. <br>The anguished audio captures a firefighter asking for help while “pinned down” by the shooter who reacted to their arrival with gunfire. <br>The situation had turned deadly as the the fireman reports in the 911 call from Canfield Mountain just north of Coeur d’Alene on Sunday: “We need law enforcement up here immediately. <br>“We have another Coeur d’Alene firefighter down … we’ve got two unresponsive battalion chiefs down, multiple gunshot wounds, two Coeur d’Alene are down.<br>“I’m pinned down,” he said. “It’s clear to me that this fire was set intentionally to draw us in.”<br>The sniper killed two responding firemen, one from the Coeur d&#8217;Alene Fire Department and another from Kootenai County Fire &; Rescue, while they were scoping out the scene. <br>A third firefighter was rushed to surgery after he being shot. His condition is now described as stable. <br>An estimated 300 law enforcement officers, from local to state to federal, responded to the incident, the sheriff said. <br>The identity of the deceased firefighters and suspect have not been released, as police investigate if the gunman made the original 911 call reporting fire on Canfield Mountain in an effort to entice firefighters to the scene .</p>

It is yet to be established that his death was either suicide or resulted from being shot during the gunfire exchange with police </strong></p>



<p>On the call monitored on the fire department scanner the first fireman is heard crying out: &#8216;Send law enforcement right now! There&#8217;s an active shooter zone. <br>&#8216;Everybody&#8217;s shot up here!&#8217; the firefighter continued, noting that two battalion chiefs were &#8216;down&#8217; and he was &#8216;pinned.&#8217;<br>He was later heard warning his fellow firefighters, &#8216;Stop. Do not come up here,&#8217; adding, &#8216;It&#8217;s clear to me that this fire was set intentionally to draw us in.&#8217; <br>Another firefighter was later heard telling dispatch he had &#8216;no idea where the shooters [are] at or where they&#8217;re going in, in which direction,&#8217; one person could be <a class="" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/live-blog/2-dead-firefighters-ambushed-coeur-dalene-idaho-live-updates-rcna215857" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heard</a> telling dispatch.<br>&#8216;I would recommend that our units, all of our firing units, escape further down the pavement towards town, maybe a half a mile or so to a safe staging area,&#8217; the first responder said.</p>

It is believed a shooter set a fire intentionally to draw first responders to the scene on the Canfield Mountain is in Coeur d’Alene, which is in northwestern Idaho, about 30 miles from Spokane, Washington.</strong></p>



<p>He continued to say they were going to need &#8216;multiple ambulances&#8217; at the scene.<br>&#8216;As soon as we get law enforcement in here to get these people out, I recommend we get no less than five&#8230; ambulances staged at the bottom. I don&#8217;t care where we get them from.&#8217; ;<br>The firefighters were ultimately forced to pull back, with Northern Lakes Fire District Chief Pat Riley <a class="" href="https://www.khq.com/news/idaho_news/multiple-firefighters-reportedly-shot-while-responding-to-fire-near-coeur-d-alene/article_1e5c4d27-5211-407f-95d2-0c273b893033.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">declaring</a> ;that he would not be deploying any more crew members until the threat was neutralized.<br>Meanwhile, the blaze continued to grow to cover 20 acres and the gunman kept shooting. ;<br>Life Flight helicopters were deployed to the scene, and photos and videos posted online showed a large police presence in the surrounding area.<br>By 4.30pm, Sheriff Norris issued to shoot to kill order on the gunman if the opportunity is presented.<br>He even deployed two helicopters with snipers to take out the gunman. ;</p>

<p>According to the grandfather, Dale Roley, his grandson came from a family of arborists and had been working in the tree service industry while trying to figure out his career path. “He wanted to be a fireman, he was doing tree work and he wanted to be a fireman in the forest,” Dale Roley said. “As far as I know, he was actually pursuing it.”<br>Wess Roley owned a shotgun and a long rifle, his grandfather said, but authorities say Sunday&#8217;s attack was executed with a sniper rifle..<br>The suspect previously lived in the Phoenix area, where he ran track at a high school, graduating in 2024. His parents had filed for divorce in 2015 when Wess who was 10. A hint of his tumultuous family life growing up is seen when his mother writing in the divorce filings that her husband had threatened her, pushed her to the ground, and “punched several holes in the walls.”<br>She told the court that her estranged husband had &#8216;threatened to sit outside my house with a sniper rifle or burn my house down.&#8217;<br>A judge granted a protective order preventing the father from having contact with his wife or son. That RTO was later amended to exclude child after the respondent wrote in a court filing: &#8216;I am not a danger to my son or anyone else,&#8217; as he contested his wife&#8217;s narrative.<br>When the divorce was granted in November 2015, the mother was designated as the custodial parent. The suspect&#8217;s father has made it clear that he isn’t close with his son and had not seen him since a family gathering last year.</p>
