<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A man opened gunned down his neighbor fire in rural Pennsylvania on Thursday morning, then engaged ambushed two state troopers who responded in a violent shootout.<br>Armed with a semiautomatic rifle, 61-year-old Carmine Faino fatally shoot his neighbor, Lori Wasko, 57, in the driveway of her home along State Route 171, a quiet two-lane road in Thompson, about 163 miles north of Philadelphia, just before 11:30 a.m. on August 7.<br>The shooter&#8217;s home was across-the-street from Wasko&#8217;s house, several hundred yards away.<br>Pennsylvania State Police Colonel Christopher Paris said Wasko was killed near her vehicle. </p>

Investigators said there was no indication that Wasko and Faino, whose homes were several hundred yards apart, had any previous interaction.<br>State Troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins responded to the call, unaware that the scene was still active, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/pennsylvania-troopers-shot-9fa326255d7522b1f0564132abfa8aea" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AP reported.</a><br>Upon arrival, they were immediately ambushed by Faino, as he opened fire on them from a distance.<br>&#8216;As soon as they got out of the car, they had no idea where the rounds came from,&#8217; Paris said at a Thursday evening press conference. &#8216;They were basically under fire.&#8217;<br>Faino riddled their police vehicles with dozens of rounds, he added.<br>Trooper Perechinsky a six-year veteran, was shot twice in the chest and torso. His partner, 10-year veteran Trooper Jenkins, was struck once in each arm.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Both troopers, who had been wearing ballistic vests, were in stable condition with serious injuries T<br>Despite his injuries, Perechinsky managed to apply tourniquets to Jenkins&#8217; arms and took quick action to prevent further tragedy.<br>&#8216;Perechinsky was able to commandeer a tractor-trailer that was driving by, and he ordered the driver of that tractor-trailer to pull his semi rig across the roadway so that more people would not drive down that roadway and potentially be subjected to the fire,&#8217; Paris said.<br>&#8216;He&#8217;s still thinking at that point in time, after being shot twice in the chest, what can I do to secure this location? What can I do to make sure nobody else gets hurt?&#8217; Paris added.<br>A third trooper helped evacuate the injured officers, who were airlifted to hospitals for emergency surgery.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An emergency services worker responding to the scene was also injured when his vehicle was hit by gunfire and veered off the road. The worker exited the vehicle and hid, fearing he might be targeted next.<br>The situation escalated into a standoff as law enforcement from multiple agencies descended on the area.<br>Faino eventually barricaded himself in a barn on his property, shooting down a police drone and at one point perching atop a propane tank, raising fears of possible explosives.<br>Police attempted to negotiate with Faino but were unsuccessful, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/07/us/pennsylvania-state-troopers-shot.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The New York Times reported.</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A specialized emergency response team ultimately shot and killed Faino approximately three hours after the initial attack after he refused to comply with commands and continued brandishing the rifle, police said.<br>Deputy Coroner Angelica Howell confirmed she was dispatched to the scene shortly after 3 p.m.<br>Susquehanna County District Attorney Marion O&#8217;Malley announced that her office would conduct a joint investigation with the State Police into the fatal shooting of Faino.<br>Residents of the area, known for its quiet and peaceful atmosphere, were left stunned by the violence.<br>&#8216;This is a very, very quiet town. There has never been anything comparable,&#8217; said Erika Mills, who lives less than a mile from the scene.<br>Paris called the ordeal &#8216;harrowing&#8217; and expressed deep gratitude that the troopers survived.<br>&#8216;We are extremely lucky to have them still with us,&#8217; he said. &#8216;They are an answer to a prayer, while we simultaneously mourn the loss of Ms. Wasko.&#8217;</p>
