<p>More than 26 years after a man was gunned down outside his Philadelphia home in what police described as a mob-style killing, a suspect was <a href="https://6abc.com/post/richard-leidy-case-arrest-made-1999-south-philadelphia-mob-style-killing-guerino-gino-marconi/17658245/">arrested</a> this week, a block from the crime scene, authorities said.<br>Federal prosecutors Tuesday announced the arrest of 60-year-old Richard Leidy in the ambush of 42-year-old mobster Guerino &#8220;Gino&#8221; Marconi and his 31-year-old girlfriend, law clerk Patricia Miley<br>On the night of April 10, 1999, Marconi and Miley were both shot by an assailant wielding a rifle, who confronted them outside Marconi&#8217;s home.<br>Marconi who was shot once in the head succumbed to his injuries in hospital a day after the shooting, while Miley who was shot three times, survived. <br>With court documents filed in Philadelphia federal court, state that Leidy is charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a prohibited firearm. <br>Leidy is also charged with simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, possession of an instrument of crime with intent and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.</p>

<p>Leidy&#8217;s arrest on Monday, 26 years later, comes as an old TV news footage showed an interview with the accused killer, the suspect is heard in the retro footage telling a reporter he feared for his family&#8217;s safety following the slaying.<br>Richard Leidy whose home had been invaded in a robbery in February, just two months before Marconi&#8217;s murder, said the men who broke looking for money threatened to kill him, holding a gun to his chest and forcing him to the ground.<br>&#8216;I&#8217;m concerned for my family&#8217;s safety and mine, sure,&#8217; Leidy told the reporter.<br>Considered a person of interest, police at the time investigated whether Marconi had been involved in the robbery possibly leading to revenge killing by Leidy, before dropping that line of investigation.</p>

<p>Leidy was arrested on Monday at his home in South Philadelphia, which is about a block from where the fatal shooting of Marconi unfolded on South 20th Street in South Philadelphia, authorities said. It was unclear if Leidy was living at the same residence when Marconi was killed.<br>Leidy was arraigned on the charges on Tuesday, but did not enter a plea, according to court records. A preliminary hearing in the case has been scheduled for Sept. 15, which, same day as the suspect&#8217;s turns 61.<br>While details of clues that to the arrest in the cold-case killing has not been disclosed, Leidy is being held in federal custody without bail.<br>According to media reports in 1999, the 42-year-old victim was as a low-level associate of Joseph Salvatore &#8220;Skinny Joey&#8221; Merlino, then reputed boss of the Philadelphia crime family.<br>On the night Marconi and Miley were both shot, then assailant before fleeing the scene corrupted the crime scene. The gunman torched a van that was parked in front of Marconi&#8217;s home and set other vehicles on fire, according to police.<br>A motive for the shooting was not immediately disclosed.<br>Marconi, who grew up in South Philadelphia, owned an auto body shop in South Philly at the time of his death, while Miley worked as a billing clerk for a Philadelphia law firm.<br>How Leidy was eventually connected to the murder remains unclear. Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore only volunteered that the combined efforts of Philadelphia homicide detectives, FBI investigators, and prosecutors with the Philadelphia District Attorney&#8217;s Office led to break through in the case. </p>
