Amidst tales of escalating genocide in Sudan’s war-torn region, it has been reported that more than 2,000 people, mainly women and children, have been executed in the last 48 hours after the city of el-Fasher in south west Sudan was captured by rebel paramilitaries.
el Fasher was the last remaining major city in Darfur controlled by the army.
Disturbing accusations of human rights falls on both sides of the conflict with the army, which has been fighting the RSF for two-and-a-half years, also been accused of war crimes.
The year and a half of siege warfare on el-Fasher created one of the grimmest places in a war the UN labelled among the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Displacement camps outside the city were officially declared to be in famine.
According to the UN, more than 1 million people have fled el Fasher, while 260,000 people remained trapped there without aid, half of them children. Those trapped within the city turned to animal fodder for food.
On Tuesday, African Union chairman Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed ‘deep concern over the escalating violence and reported atrocities’. He also condemned ‘alleged war crimes and ethnically targeted killings of civilians’.
Sudan’s army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, acknowledging the loss of the strategic city on Monday said his forces had withdrawn from El-Fasher ‘to a safer location’, .
General al-Burhan pledged to fight ‘until this land is purified’, but analysts said that Sudan was now effectively partitioned along an east-west axis, with the RSF having already set up a parallel government.

With many voices suggesting that the key to resolving the current crises would be a political solution, an international group comprising of the UAE alongside the United States, Saudi Arabia and Egypt have been working for a negotiated peace.
The group has proposed a ceasefire and a transitional civilian government that excludes both the army and the RSF from power structure. However, talks a few days back in Washington involving the Quad made no progress.
Ironically UAE has been accused by the UN of supplying the RSF with weapons, a charge it denies.
The army reportedly, has its own foreign backers in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Turkey all of whom have denied the claims.
In March the army retook full control of the Sudanese capital Khartoum, but it is now excluded from a third of Sudanese territory.
With both sides now having achieved significant gains neither appears willing to compromise in negotiations. A development pointing more to the possibility the country the end could be partitioned as a compromise.
