<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An Illinois surgeon has been arrested in the double-homicide of an Ohio dentist and his wife, just after Christmas. <br>The suspect is the ex-husband of the mother-of-two who was discovered shot dead alongside her current husband in their home in Weinland Park, a suburb of Columbus. <br>Dr. Michael David McKee, 39, has been charged with two counts of murder over the killings of Monique Tepe, 39, and her husband Dr. Spencer Tepe, 37. The couple were found gunned down in their home in the early hours of December 30.<br>Spencer died from multiple gunshot wounds, while Monique had been shot once in the chest.<br>The Tepe&#8217;s share a one-year-old son, four-year-old daughter. Their toddlers along with the family&#8217;s pet dog, discovered unhurt inside the home, are in the care of relatives.<br>Responding officers found no sign of forced entry or a firearm, although three 9mm shell casings were found at the scene. Police at the time did not believe this was a case of murder-suicide.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ultimately Columbus police identified a potential suspect through footage recorded by neighborhood surveillance cameras, according to court records <br>According to the probable cause report, a figure captured by cameras walking near the scene on the night of the killings was tracked to a vehicle which arrived just prior to the homicides, leaving shortly after the homicides. <br>Detectives were able to identify this vehicle that was linked to Dr. Michael McKee. Investigators who located the vehicle in Rockford, Illinois, also found evidence that the surgeon was in possession of the vehicle prior to and after the homicides.<br>McKee’s mugshot was shared on the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office website, which showed he was booked into jail on Saturday just before noon.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The former Monique Sabaturski was briefly married to Michael McKee, a surgeon. The tied the knot on August 22, 2015. Seven months later, they were separated, in March 2016. They had no children when Monique filed for divorce.<br>In the complaint for divorce, Monique states they are ‘incompatible’. Divorce proceedings for the short-lived union which began in May 2017, concluded a month later.<br>The documents reveal the plaintiff stated that she paid for her engagement and wedding rings. Listing them as her separate property, she stated she paid $2,500 for the engagement ring and $3,500 for the wedding ring.<br>The separation agreement included a requirement that Monique had to pay McKee $1,281.59 back for ‘miscellaneous debt’, with the added clause that if she did not reimburse him by July 1, 2018, she would debt would accrue 23% interest.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When the pair filed for divorce, they were living in different states, with Monique living in Westerville, close to her parents, and working for Nationwide.<br>Michael McKee at the time lived in Roanoke, Virginia, working for the Carilion Clinic, practicing as a vascular surgeon at the OSF Cardiovascular Institute.<br>When the divorce documents were filed, they also included a ‘standard mutual temporary restraining order, requiring both parties to refrain from ‘harassing…interfering with, assaulting or doing bodily harm to the other spouse’.<br>The exes paid their own attorney fees and Monique paid the filing fee and fee for a private judge, in a bid to expedite the proceedings privately.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The unexpected arrest and charging of McKee happened a day before friends and family will gather for a visitation and celebration of life for the Tepes in Columbus, Ohio, tomorrow afternoon.<br>The Tepe murders sent shockwaves through the tight-knit local community in Weinland Park, with their closest neighbors still too traumatized to speak about what happened.<br>On the morning of December 30 panicked friends of the couple struggled to reach them before the they were found deceased.<br>One of Spencer’s friend, Alexander Ditty, standing outside the Tepes’ home at 9.57am, called the dispatcher to report that he ‘can hear kids inside’ adding that ‘he thought he heard one of them yelling’.<br>Ditty requested that police to ‘return’ to the property &#8211; Cops who did an initial welfare check at the home received no response to their knocks at the door.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dr Mark Valrose, the principal at the Athens dental practice where Dr. Spencer Tepe practiced, called for the welfare check on Spencer, from his vacation in Florida, after he didn’t arrive for work that morning and neither he nor his wife could be reached.<br>Another concerned co-worker is recorded to have made ‘another’ call to police to report that their boss never showed up for work that morning and she thinks something is wrong.<br>In another call by Ditty 10.05am on December 30, he reports seeing Spencer dead, as he tells dispatchers, ‘There is a body inside . . &#8230;.he is lying next to the bed and there is blood lying next to him,&#8217; telling police <br>that his friend ‘has not been ill and does not do drugs.&#8217;<br>Responding officers who are later entered the home through an open door or window, found ‘one male shot multiple times and a female at least once through the chest.’ They also found bullet casings inside the home. <br>The deceased couple&#8217;s children who were found unharmed inside the home, were left in the care of neighbors, next door and within hours Spencer’s dad Tim Tepe arrived at the scene with his mother.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Friends and family described the Tepes as a warm, kind and happy couple who were devoted to their children and ‘whose lives were filled with joy, love and deep connection to others’, per a family statement.<br>A small memorial of floral tributes, teddy bears and other gifts had amassed outside the couple’s home.<br>On Tuesday evening, neighbors gathered in grief at a private event at a community space in Weinland park, with a police liaison officer stationed outside for support.<br>Several shared a group embrace before attending a private gathering to remember the Tepes, who bought their three-bedroom home in May 2020.</p>

In the tribute Spencer and Monique were described as &#8216;remarkable inside and out&#8217;.<br>&#8216;They were extraordinary people whose lives were filled with love, joy, and deep connection to others,&#8217; it read. </p>
